Anyone have a Rotifer and Vorticella in one video? Any other good protist/animal comparisons?
A vertebrate and an invertebrate. 500+ millions of years of evolutionary distance.

LOL.
the existence of "experts" is a myth the fact that certain skills are "deep" is a meme. you can learn anything in one or two weeks. the only thing that exists is depth

Is there a "go shopping with @dieworkwear lottery"? I don't gamble, but I'd put in $100. I bet we could generate $100k pretty easily. $50k to charity. $25k to derek guy and $25k to travel and a new wardrobe.

Love the orange stuff.
Our latest paper @NatureMicrobiol: converting waste into delicious food using fungi. We studied a traditional Indonesian food and discovered a mold domesticated for waste-to-food conversion. Amazing international collab involving scientists, chefs. tinyurl.com/36rzkr57

I honestly don't see this as a concern. Any unethical scientist has been able to make convincing data for decades or centuries. Sure, it's easier now. Finding ways to police fraud isn't and has never been the solution. We need to prevent and disincentivize scientific fraud.
AI can be used to make convincing looking fake data. There is no way we can distinguish real from fake anymore. It is safe to assume that genAI has already resulted in many fake papers. Scientific publishing is not prepared for this.

Our short report on a remarkable feature of #ctenophores out now: Reverse development in the ctenophore Mnemiopsis. We show that Mnemiopsis is capable of reversal from mature lobate to early cydippid🤩. @MSarsCentre @UiB @biorxivpreprint #rejuvenation biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Prediction: Oilers @EdmontonOilers win on Monday (yes,Friday hasn't happened yet). On Tuesday @JustinTrudeau declares a national holiday simultaneously ensuring his next election win while further alienating many Oilers fans. These are the difficult realities of Canadian politics

Happy to be a part of this fantastic work.
Very excited to share that our work identifying a new factor that works with MICOS to establish mitochondrial cristae architecture is now out @CurrentBiology! cell.com/current-biology/ful…

Phew! I got this right...
What's more convincing? p = 0.04 in a sample of 10 or p = 0.04 in a sample of 1,000,000? 🧵
21%Sample of 10
45%Sample of 1,000,000
23%They're the same
11%What's a p-value?

Indeed. No more @BioRender You were the bubblegum pop of figures anyway. Science needs more punk vibes.
Time to ditch @BioRender? I had no idea they were claiming copyright to the figures we make with it, even after we pay for use of the service.

Still surprised that #triforce isn't trending. @NintendoAmerica
Alright everybody, what will undoubtedly forever be the lab's strangest discovery is now out in Nature. It's a protein that evolved to self-assemble into a Sierpinski fractal. nature.com/articles/s41586-0… 1/n

Ganon is gonna wanna see this @NintendoAmerica @Nintendo It is a real subcellular triforce!
Happy and super excited to share our discovery of a protein fractal! We unravel the surprisingly simple emergence of these marvellous structures and show it might have even been an accident of evolution. Read the full story here nature.com/articles/s41586-0… Or just stick around 🧵

I'd watch this Netflix special. But more importantly, I think I missed a tree...
Are #choanoflagellates, #filastereans, #ichthyosporeans & #corallochytreans truly the best models for exploring animal origins? While these lineages have been so far pivotal to address the origin of animals (and they surely will continue to be!!), eDNA has revealed that there are at least 8 additional, unknown, lineages closely related to animals. Yes. 8! Could these mysterious relatives offer further, or even deeper, insights into animal evolution? Each known lineage has already provided crucial insights—imagine what these hidden ones could reveal about the transition to #multicellularity! We embark on a journey to bring these unknown lineages to light. The quest begins now! If interested contact us. @IBE_Barcelona @ERC_Research #Magnificient8 #revealingtheunknown #knownunknowns #biodiversity 🎥: Pablo Martin Lerma

All I hear is "fund basic research"
🧵 (1/6) Two years ago, when I only started digging into the current state of aging research, I was much more optimistic about our progress. I read articles like Laura Deming's Longevity FAQ, which lists "95 things that make mice live longer", and thought: "Well, at least we have something that works for mice, right?" Boy, I was naive! Well, below is a list of findings that made me think we have almost nothing that reliably works on mice. The Longevity FAQ post: ldeming.com/longevityfaq#95t….
