The Correction the Market Didn't Want to Price In
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, U.S. markets recorded their worst session since the tariff shocks of April 2025. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52%, entered technical correction territory (a decline of more than 10% from its October 6 high), and erased approximately $2.3 trillion in market value from the Nasdaq 100 alone. The S&P 500 dropped 4.36%, and the Dow Jones lost more than 1,800 points. Semiconductors led the losses: Nvidia fell about 9%, AMD plunged more than 17%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index posted a decline of more than 12%.
The selloff was not an isolated liquidity event. It reflected a rapid and aggressive repricing of the artificial intelligence investment cycle following the midterm election results. Democrats won control of the House and Senate and captured relevant state governorships, including Texas — a state central to the expansion of chip factories and data centers. Candidates who had promised to curb or place conditions on data center construction scored significant victories. The market, which over the past two years had priced in a trajectory of expansion with almost no regulatory friction and strong federal political support, began to incorporate more concrete restrictions.
Regulatory risk as the immediate catalyst
The previous administration had treated the AI buildout as a strategic priority, combining deregulation, incentives, and public procurement. With the new composition of Congress and state governments, investors began to assign a higher probability to limits on data center expansion, stricter energy and water impact requirements, and greater scrutiny of security, transparency, and data use. In states where local opposition to these facilities was already strong, the shift in power raises the risk of moratoriums or delays on large-scale projects.
This uncertainty directly affects the core of the market. A significant share of the recent performance of the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq was concentrated in technology companies and AI infrastructure suppliers. When the political landscape changes the expected cost and timeline of returns on these investments, the adjustment is not limited to the companies directly involved: it propagates to semiconductors, energy, construction, and related services.
The energy question and the sustainability of the model
Large-scale data centers consume substantial volumes of electricity and water. In several regions, the accelerated growth of this demand was already pressuring local energy prices and generating resistance from communities and the agricultural sector. The new political configuration makes it more plausible that environmental and land-use restrictions will be imposed more rigorously. For a sector that still operates with thin or negative margins at many of its leading companies, any structural increase in energy costs or delay in computing capacity alters the expected return calculation.
At the same time, part of the market questions the circularity of capital flows within the AI ecosystem. Cross-investments among chipmakers, data center operators, and software companies created a dynamic in which reported growth at one end sustained demand at the other. When the narrative of continuous expansion is interrupted, the market begins to demand clearer evidence of independent cash generation.
Valuation correction or structural change?
Some interpret Thursday's move as a necessary correction after years of elevated valuations and growth expectations that exceeded demonstrated monetization capacity. Under that reasoning, the market would simply be removing excess optimism before a more disorderly adjustment occurred. The concentration of capital in technology and AI — estimated at around 40% of recent flows — made the index particularly sensitive to any negative revision of growth assumptions.
Another reading emphasizes the political and therefore temporary nature of the shock. Markets react intensely to changes in government, but the fundamental quality of leading companies does not change overnight. Companies with solid competitive positions, robust balance sheets, and the ability to generate recurring revenue tend to recover ground once political uncertainty stabilizes. There is also the expectation that rotation moves toward sectors less exposed to regulatory risk will be partially reversed over the coming months, especially if activity data and corporate earnings remain consistent.
Implications and what remains open
The episode exposes the U.S. market's dependence — and, by extension, that of correlated global indices — on a single growth theme. Artificial intelligence remains a technology with transformative potential, but the speed of its adoption at industrial scale depends on available energy, social acceptance, and clear rules. The combination of high U.S. public debt, elevated energy costs, and greater political scrutiny reduces the margin for error that the market had been granting the sector.
For investors, the November 5 session serves as a reminder that structural growth narratives can be interrupted by political and physical infrastructure factors. The price adjustment may open selective opportunities, but it also requires greater attention to balance sheet quality, dependence on external capital, and exposure to energy and regulatory restrictions. The market has not yet fully priced in the final design of the policies that will be adopted starting in January. Until there is greater clarity on the scope and pace of restrictions, volatility in the technology segment is likely to remain elevated.
What happened on November 5 is not just a one-day drop. It is the market recognizing that AI growth has ceased to be an exclusively technological story and has also become a political and real-resource story.

PARAGUAY ON THE BRINK OF THE ABYSS: MEGA-BANK COLLAPSES, HITS PENSIONS AND PUTS PRESIDENT IN IMPEACHMENT CROSSHAIRS
November 3, 2026 | Economy, politics and financial chaos
Paraguay woke up in panic. Ueno Bank — a giant with nearly 3 million clients — collapsed overnight. The Central Bank intervened, suspended everything and left millions without access to their own money. Within hours, the banking crisis turned into a political earthquake: the Central Bank president resigned, executives were arrested and the opposition is already calling for the impeachment of Santiago Peña.
The collapse
The bank's solvency ratio plunged to less than half the legal minimum. The resolution was passed unanimously on November 2. Five days earlier, Ueno was still announcing a US$100 million capitalization plan. On November 3, it was under intervention. The bank accounted for 8.9% of system deposits and had 2.94 million clients.
Pensioners in the crosshairs
The Social Security Institute (IPS) had up to US$380 million invested in the bank. Around 32,000 retirees received their payments through it. Payments will be transferred, but the pension money is under uncertainty. Government deposits at Ueno reached US$869 million — 29% of the institution's total.
Resignation and arrests
Carlos Carvallo, president of the Central Bank, resigned — and had previously chaired the institution that preceded Ueno. The Public Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal investigation for fraud and breach of trust. Eight people linked to the management were detained; seven remained in police custody on Tuesday night.
Peña in the crossfire
President Santiago Peña had a stake in Ueno Holding until March 2025. The opposition wants him and Vice President Pedro Alliana impeached. The government swears the crisis is isolated. In the streets of Asunción, protesters clashed with police. The Central Bank promises to return up to US$38,000 per depositor — in installments.
What comes next
Three tests lie ahead: saving depositors, punishing those responsible and restoring the credibility of financial supervision. The final damage? Nobody knows. But the message is already clear: growth is not synonymous with soundness — and public trust cannot be bought with an official guarantee.
🌍 THE WORLD ON ALERT: WAR IS NO LONGER CONFINED TO THE BATTLEFIELD
November 3, 2026 — The world is going through a dangerous convergence of military, political, energy, and cyber crises. And the events of the last 48 hours reveal how global security has become vulnerable on multiple fronts.
In the United States, millions of voters are going to the polls to decide control of Congress while Washington faces one of the most delicate geopolitical decisions in its recent history. The war against Iran continues, new military operations have been carried out in the Strait of Hormuz, and the possibility of an escalation remains open. The election result could shift the internal American political balance precisely when military decisions of enormous scope are being discussed.
At the center of the tension is Pickaxe Mountain, an Iranian underground facility protected by a massive layer of rock. Commentator Tucker Carlson claims that the American government could consider a nuclear attack on the site in the coming days. The claim has not been verified, and Donald Trump has already stated publicly that he does not intend to use nuclear weapons. However, the discussion exposes a real military problem: deeply buried facilities can withstand even the most powerful conventional bombs. An operation of this nature, especially if it involved nuclear weapons, would have consequences that would completely transcend the borders of the Middle East.
While the world watches Iran, Europe faces threats of a different nature.
In Poland, counterterrorism units were deployed near the border with Kaliningrad, Russian territory. Intelligence services warned about possible sabotage operations and armed incursions. The concern is not only a conventional invasion, but the possibility of hybrid operations capable of causing incidents that are difficult to attribute and potentially dangerous to NATO security.
At the same time, a wave of cyberattacks hit refrigeration systems in European supermarkets. Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Estonia, and other countries recorded incidents. Intruders remotely manipulated equipment, raised temperatures, and caused food to be destroyed. France had already faced similar attacks in October.
No bombers, tanks, or missiles were needed. Connected and vulnerable systems were enough.
These episodes reveal a fundamental transformation in the nature of modern conflicts. Civilian infrastructure that depends on digital systems — food, energy, water, transportation, and communications — can become vulnerable without a single soldier crossing a border. This does not mean that the European incidents have proven state authorship or are linked to the Iranian crisis. It means that the attack surface of modern societies has expanded dramatically.
In Japan, the newly created national disaster management agency recommended that families keep reserves of water and food for at least three days, preferably a week. The guidance is mainly related to preparation for earthquakes and other natural disasters, not an imminent military threat. Still, it reinforces a universal lesson: governments and emergency systems have limits, and civil resilience also depends on individual preparation.
And there is one variable that directly connects the geopolitical crisis to the world economy: oil.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important energy arteries on the planet. Any prolonged interruption can reverberate in fuel prices, transportation, industrial production, and global inflation. Stock markets, currencies, government bonds, and cryptocurrencies react not only to events, but to the expectation that the situation could worsen.
In this environment, Bitcoin deserves attention as a risk indicator traded 24 hours a day. While traditional stock exchanges close, the crypto market continues to absorb information and adjust prices. It is not an infallible forecasting instrument, but it can reveal shifts in sentiment before the opening of major financial markets.
What makes the moment especially delicate is not the isolated existence of each crisis. The world has already faced wars, sabotage, digital attacks, and economic instability. The problem is the possibility that these vulnerabilities could amplify one another.
A military escalation can trigger an energy shock. An energy shock can drive up inflation. Inflation can constrain monetary policy and pressure already fragile markets. Cyberattacks can compromise supply chains at a moment of growing political and social tension.
None of this demonstrates the existence of a coordinated global operation. Nor does it mean that a nuclear war is imminent. But it shows that international stability depends on systems that are increasingly interconnected, complex, and vulnerable.
The greatest threat of our time may not be an isolated crisis, but the speed with which different crises can turn into a single systemic crisis.
The world does not need to panic. It needs to understand the scale of the risks, distinguish facts from speculation, and recognize that security, sovereignty, and resilience are no longer exclusively military matters.
The danger is not only in the next missile. It is also in the invisible infrastructure on which all of civilization depends.

Reflitamos.
