I spoke with Haley Stevens yesterday.
Feeling a bit absurd in pointing out the obvious and being far kinder than I should have been, I reminded her that the outcome of this senate race will be viewed in the light of a future Supreme Court vacancy, and I expressed a hope that all of us understand the stakes.
She assured me she's supporting Dr. El-Sayed, sent me a video of a recent speech she gave blasting Mike Rogers and said this: "Still stands. I promise."
She also said she's been sending this video to other folks to make it clear where she stands on this race.
Again: that was yesterday.
I have known Haley Stevens for years. I have counted her as a friend and an ally. We've had many thoughtful conversations about this country, and she has never failed to remind me that her mother is a fan of my writing.
Whatever other political differences we have, she has always made it clear to me she would stand with LGBTQ people. It was a red line she refused to cross.
Instead, she has made the inexplicable decision to endorse a man who views LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of full equality.
I can't help but wonder what her mother must be thinking right now.
I have no idea what has happened to the person I thought I knew, but clearly, she has completely taken leave of her senses in endorsing a Republican who is little more than a Trump sycophant -- less than 24 hours after promising me that she has not wavered from the bigger picture.
I am disgusted with her cynicism and cowardice in this moment. God forgive me for trusting her.
If you're a Michigan voter and as disgusted as I am, get to your polling place and vote for Dr. El-Sayed.

I’m tired. I’m angry. And honestly, I’m heartbroken by what this country has become.
I’m tired of watching ordinary people struggle to survive while the wealthy accumulate more than they could spend in a thousand lifetimes. I’m tired of wars fought for the ambitions of powerful men while ordinary people are sent to die. I’m tired of a system that demands we spend our entire lives working just to afford the privilege of existing.
Everything feels so unnecessarily cruel. We have the resources, the knowledge, and the ability to build a world where people can actually live, not just survive. And yet here we are.
I don’t want to spend my life angry and afraid of the future. I want a better country. A better world. One where human lives matter more than power, profit, and greed.
Why is that so much to ask?

A private prison company offered Minnesota an empty prison for 75 million dollars. The state said no. Then Trump’s administration paid the same company almost 500 million for it.
The prison has sat empty in Appleton, Minnesota since 2010. Last year CoreCivic emailed the state and offered to sell it for 75 million, upgrades included. Minnesota passed. Fifteen months later, Homeland Security bought it for an ICE detention center at 495.6 million.
How could this be? You guessed it. CoreCivic gave half a million dollars to Trump’s inaugural committee. And it still gets paid about 75 million a year to run the place.
Republicans love talking about fraud in Minnesota. JD Vance says his task force is all over it. So where are they on this one? I break it all down in today’s show (link in reply).

How the hell did this Administration allow a 28-year-old DOGE operative with zero government experience to take over USAID, fire thousands of federal employees, and shut down lifesaving aid programs around the world?
Not to mention that HR had zero record of him working there, he never completed his background paperwork to legally start working for the agency, and he didn’t even have an ID badge, because, officially, he didn’t exist as an employee.
And yet, all on his own, this man was given the go ahead to lock staff out of their own systems and use your taxpayer dollars to gut lifesaving programs with zero transparency.
The Trump Administration owes the American people and Congress answers. Who signed off on this? Why on earth was he given this kind of power?
This wasn’t an accident. Someone handed this man unchecked power, someone knew he wasn’t legally authorized to use it, and someone decided that there was nothing wrong with that.
Well, everything is wrong with that. Congress needs answers about this, and that is NOT optional.

Hey, serious talk here. They are going to try their best to steal this election because they know what is coming. You have every right to defend yourself and your vote. You have a 1st Amendment right and a 2nd Amendment right. We don't advocate violence - we advocate self defense.
What's with the US military practicing digging mass graves?
What's with the GOP / MAGA fucking with voting machines?
What aren't you seeing that is happening behind closed doors outside of public view?
You need over whelming numbers to make sure that these assholes can't cheat their way out of this (because ever indicator is that they are absolutely going to use any means necessary to overthrow your votes by nefarious means). All the boxes are checked. They're desperate, they're backed into a corner. They're evil.
They'll do whatever it takes to hold on to power.
