New paper: Selfish Equality In a global experiment, I show that high-redistribution countries are not particularly altruistic. Instead, they believe inequality is pragmatically harmful. This creates selfish equality -- the defining feature of redistributive countries.

One Extra Year on Substack: @BarbaraBiasi shares her experience of pregnancy and motherhood while balancing a tenure-track career. “If the answer is always “wait,” then motherhood starts to look like something one is allowed to consider only after the real work is done: after one has proven enough, published enough, and earned enough permission. And given how long the path to tenure has become, for many people that moment may simply never come.” New contributions published every Wednesday: oneextrayear.substack.com/p/… #WomenInEcon #WE_ARE_IN
Its story-day! This week we hear from the amazing @BarbaraBiasi who shares a heartwarming tale about how kids actually made her a better researcher and the crucial importance of role models. “I did not get there alone. Supportive colleagues, especially women, helped me in ways too numerous to count … They showed me, again and again, that motherhood and ambition did not have to cancel each other out.” open.substack.com/pub/oneext…

💡 Why would a firm spend millions training workers it doesn’t even employ? From open-sourcing to certifications, superstar firms often train the workforce of their customers. My JMP explains why. 🧵

It's hard to get identification when asking big questions. I sometimes ask my students to draw a PPF of "big ideas" and "identification." It's good know where you sit on that graph (with a project or as a scholar), and make a conscious decision on where you'd like to be.

Thrilled to have received the Young Economist Award from the Italian Association of Labor Economists. Especially honored that it is in memory of Carlo Dell’Arringa whom I had the chance to meet during my studies and who contributed to shaping my desire to become a labor economist

Europe's compute/AI/tech/innovation (all scale, cluster intensive) deficit cannot be solved without mechanisms to share the gains from concentration. Member states will demand their own data centers, ensuring fragmentation in an industry where scale is all. siliconcontinent.com/p/shoul…

(Youngian) meritocracy often reduces social mobility because wealthy parents invest heavily in their children's education when it reliably predicts success.
