Rejection is not a dead end. It's a learning opportunity.
Digest, parse, advance.
You put everything into that pitch. Then it came back a pass.
Before you take it personally, hear this.
@rbwalksintoabar explains the two reasons a strong pitch still misses the read request, and why a “no” isn’t a dead end.
Tell us in the comments: what’s a “no” that made your work better?

She was twenty-one and about to have a baby, and a shop accused her of taking some bottles of alcohol.
An officer stood in front of her car and pointed a gun through the windscreen.
Ta'Kiya Young and her unborn daughter both died in that car park.
Blendon Township, Ohio. 24 August 2023. A Kroger supermarket.
Ta'Kiya Young was twenty-one, a mother of two boys, and about six months pregnant with a daughter she had already named.
Shop staff reported that she had taken bottles of alcohol. Two officers came out to her car.
What the body camera shows: one officer at the driver's window telling her to get out. The other officer, Connor Grubb, moves in front of the bonnet of the car and draws his weapon.
She says: are you going to shoot me?
The car edges forward. Grubb fires once through the windscreen.
She died. Her daughter died.
He was standing in front of a moving car he had chosen to stand in front of. Police training in most American departments says explicitly that an officer should move out of the path of a vehicle rather than shoot at it, because shooting the driver does not stop the car.
In August 2024 a grand jury indicted Connor Grubb for murder. He turned himself in.
The case has been through the courts since. A judge dismissed the counts relating to the death of the unborn child, and proceedings on the remaining charges have continued.
And here is the figure to hold while you read the rest of the week.
The allegation was shoplifting. Not armed robbery. Not violence.
A few bottles taken from a supermarket. That is what the whole thing was about, from the first radio call to the last breath of a woman six months pregnant in a car park in Ohio.

In 1943, white Military Police tried to export American racism by attacking Black soldiers at an English pub. They never expected those troops to raid the base armory and meet them in the streets with rifles.
In June 1943, while the United States was fighting Nazi Germany alongside Britain during World War II, a violent confrontation erupted between Black American soldiers and white American military police in the English village of Bamber Bridge, Lancashire. The incident became known as the Battle of Bamber Bridge, exposing the racial divisions within the American military even while its troops were stationed overseas.
At the time, the U.S. armed forces were racially segregated. Black soldiers of the 1511th Quartermaster Truck Regiment were stationed near Bamber Bridge, where local residents welcomed them into pubs and allowed them to socialize with white British civilians. This stood in sharp contrast to the segregation they experienced in their own military.
American military authorities reportedly pressured local pubs to introduce racial segregation. The residents resisted, and some pubs responded by displaying signs welcoming Black American soldiers while excluding white American servicemen. It was an extraordinary act of defiance against segregationist demands from a foreign military.
On the night of June 24, 1943, white American military police entered the Ye Olde Hob Inn and attempted to arrest Private Eugene Nunn, reportedly over his uniform and pass. An argument developed, and the MPs returned with reinforcements. The confrontation escalated into an armed clash involving Black soldiers and white military police. As tensions spread back to the military base, some Black soldiers collected weapons from the armoury.
The fighting continued into the early hours of June 25. Private William Crossland was killed, and seven other people were wounded. In the aftermath, 32 Black soldiers were convicted of mutiny and related offences. Their sentences were later reduced. No white military police were prosecuted for the killing.
The incident received limited coverage in the United States, and military authorities sought to control information about it. It was an uncomfortable story for a country presenting itself as a defender of freedom while maintaining racial segregation within its own armed forces.
Bamber Bridge remains an important chapter in the history of Black military service. These men had travelled thousands of miles to fight fascism abroad, yet they were still forced to confront racism within their own ranks. The welcome they received from ordinary British residents showed that segregation was not inevitable, even when powerful institutions tried to impose it.
