Another explanation some have offered is Epstein blackmail of Trump, but it is very difficult to believe. Personally, as I argued in the article, I believe it was a miscalculation by Trump.
If we assume Americans started this war out of ideological conviction, it really shows how Marxists fail to understand American foreign policy in the Middle East. It is impossible to understand US imperialism solely through material conditions.
