When these structural cushions experience progressive degeneration, they lose their volumetric moisture content and develop structural fissures or tears, which frequently culminates in chronic localized pain. To address this structural decline, an experimental, second-generation biomaterial known as HYDRAFIL has been engineered to fill internal structural voids and re-establish mechanical support directly within the compromised disc. During the initial clinical feasibility evaluation, physicians administered this heated hydrogel via a percutaneous needle directly into the affected lumbar discs.
