and how heartbreaking it is that, even standing in front of alya, cihan still defines himself through meryem’s abandonment. the truly sad thing is how much meryem still weighs on the way he understands love. that wound has never healed. he has turned that experience into a personal sentence, convincing himself that he is destined to lose the people he loves, as though it were a fate he could never escape. and what hurts is that, when he speaks about losing alya, he seems unable to separate that pain from the abandonment he suffered with meryem. it’s almost as if alya was meant to be the one to heal the wound another woman left behind, and losing her was simply another blow that reopened it.
but no, cihan, alya is not the cure for the pain of being abandoned by meryem. she deserved a love in which her place, her loss and the pain of losing her were entirely her own, not echoes of what another woman once put you through. losing alya should have meant losing alya: a different kind of heartbreak, deeper and uniquely tied to the love you had for her. how unfair that even in his grief over her, meryem’s shadow still seems to take up so much space.
i wish i had heard cihan say, “i didn’t know what it meant to lose the person you love when i said those words, but you taught me what it really means.” in that case, his pain would have made so much more sense to me, a pain rooted solely in his love for alya. but cihan carries a wound that goes beyond her. perhaps he should have healed that wound with meryem before starting something with alya, instead of projecting the fear and pain of a previous relationship onto her when she never deserved any of it. while her pain is focused on losing him, on her love for him… 💔
