La mujer se acercó al micrófono.
«No sé si se acordará de mí. Me llamo Laura».

Today on World CRISPR Day, we would like to highlight our two chemistry laureates Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier.
In 2012, they developed a method for high-precision gene editing, which has transformed the field of biotechnology and medicine. The genetic scissors became known as CRISPR/Cas9. In 2020 their breakthrough was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Uttarakhand has finally installed its first sensor-based Early Warning System (EWS) at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli. In 2024, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) identified 13 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, including five categorised as being at the highest risk. Vasundhara Tal was one of them.
The concern is Glacial Lake Outburst Flood or GLOF. As glaciers retreat and conditions change, water accumulates in glacial lakes. If the natural barrier holding that water fails, a sudden, powerful flood can rush downstream, threatening settlements, roads, bridges and lives.
Vasundhara Tal is the first of these lakes to receive this sensor-based early warning system. Scientific teams from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, carried out the installation under the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA). Sensors will monitor lake levels, weather and changes in the surrounding terrain, transmitting data through satellite communication where mobile networks are unavailable.
This is an important step, but one installation is not enough. The remaining high-risk lakes need time-bound monitoring, reliable alerts and downstream evacuation plans. As we all know, in the Himalayas, disaster preparedness cannot wait for the next tragedy.
