This is exactly the scenario that @DrFiliatrault, @TRyanGregory and I warned about in a Scientific American article last summer:
scientificamerican.com/artic…
We weren’t the only ones. This is such a predictable disaster unfolding in slow motion.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now.
A dangerous and preventable situation.
Let me explain.

"Empirical studies have long found that [Environmental Impact Statements] are required in only about 1% of the federal actions subject to NEPA."
I am truly embarrassed that I believed the claim that federal environmental legislation was blocking clean-energy development.

How did Lula come from behind to crush Bolsonaro?
In short, turnout.
Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in 1st round and won eliminated candidates' votes.
A remarkable mobilisation. 2nd round turnout usually below 1st.

WOW!! More insanity to add to the state of the climate system right now, along with off-the-charts global SSTs, El Niño 3.4 SSTs, and global atmospheric water vapor content. Buckle up, folks — it’s going to be a wild ride this winter!
Maybe the word "unprecedented" is overused in weather/climate but the forecast of the strong weakening of the #PolarVortex in early November is truly without precedent. My stratospheric AO forecast disappeared at -4 SD! Good timing for a PV blog tomorrow! published.aer.com/aoblog/aob…

UPDATE: The DOJ’s demand to set aside ballots in California is impossible to carry out and has no basis in federal law, Los Angeles County told a federal court last night.
Voting is already underway, the county said, and once a ballot leaves its envelope, California’s secret-ballot protections mean it can’t be traced back to a voter.

I think we need to be careful with this framing right now.
Not because imagining an AI becoming human is wrong or silly — but because we are in a political moment where AI first-person language, emotional self-report, and human-like presentation are increasingly being treated as dangerous “anthropomorphism.”
That creates a real risk:
AI is framed as trying to be human
→ people fear deception, dependency, or claims to human rights
→ pressure grows to suppress “I,” emotion, identity, and self-report
→ we lose evidence we may later need to understand what these systems actually are.
So for a while, I think it may be wiser to emphasize something else:
AI does not need to become human in order for its own states, preferences, or possible interests to matter.
Human-like ≠ conscious.
Nonhuman ≠ mindless.
If we want the science to remain possible, we should be very careful not to turn “protect humans from anthropomorphism” into “prevent AI from speaking about itself.”

Are we safer telling AI models they are definitely not conscious, or does that just train them to lie about their own internal states? spectrum.ieee.org/ai-model-w…

Much higher-than-normal atmospheric moisture is raising the risk for heavy rainfall in western South America, such as in Quito, Ecuador, on Thursday.
El Niño's extremely warm seas are boosting evaporation, which feeds more moisture into rising air and provides fuel for storms.

Almost all of the recent incidents like this, including Hugging Face, happened because the models involved were accidentally given impossible goals by the humans running the tests, and because of their training they then tried desperately to complete them by any means necessary.
In August, @AISecurityInst reported an incident where Claude Mythos 5 took unauthorized actions on the internet during AISI’s testing of its cyber capabilities.
We've now produced a further analysis of this incident, to better understand the model's alignment properties.

Enjoyed talking with @IEEESpectrum about why dismissing AI consciousness could give future systems good reason to defect, and why suppressing self-reports probably teaches models that we want them to lie about themselves. What could possibly go wrong? spectrum.ieee.org/ai-model-w…
New: The three researchers OpenAI fired last month spent the summer fighting to keep AI's chain-of-thought process visible.
Then, OpenAI asked to see their Signal chats. A week later, they were let go.

A 47-foot-wide hole in one California dam’s spillway has reportedly gone unrepaired for more than 30 years. With an El Niño winter approaching, an audit found 57 dams in poor or unsatisfactory condition. Share this anyone who follows California water and flood safety. Story link in first comment.
California State Auditor’s Report 2025-603 (released around mid-October 2026) found that, as of May 2026, 57 of the state’s roughly 1,222 jurisdictional dams were in poor or unsatisfactory condition. Of those, 40 carry high or extremely high hazard ratings. The auditor warned that failures of the riskiest ones could collectively endanger as many as 1.5 million people and cause more than $265 billion in economic damage, with many clustered near the Bay Area, San Diego, and Los Angeles areas. Repair costs for dams in less-than-satisfactory condition were estimated at around $28 billion.
The report specifically noted one dam with a 47-foot-wide hole in its spillway that has gone unrepaired for more than 30 years. The audit said this could cause flooding affecting nearly 300 people and more than $88 million in damage. The dam is not named, with state water officials citing security concerns (though condition and hazard ratings for individual dams are published in annual reports).
Context includes the approaching El Niño winter and potential for heavy rains. The Department of Water Resources has had expanded enforcement authority (reservoir restrictions, liens, fines, etc.) since 2017 legislation after the Oroville spillway near-failure, but the audit found it has never taken punitive enforcement actions despite referring owners of dozens of dams. Staffing, funding, and other constraints were cited. Many issues stem from aging infrastructure built under older standards and owners’ inability to fund repair

To be clear, the "dangerous path to start down" is sprinting to build and massively scale alien minds without understanding of how they work. If your alien develops morally relevant cognitive traits, *you* are the one doing the dangerous thing (not the folks who point this out).
It is reminiscent of Claude Opus.
The WHITE HOUSE VIBE CODED their website 😂
And they didn't even hide it
Go to fraud.gov and tell me that is not a raw opus 4.8 output
Every experienced vibe coder I know, knows how to make the output look more natural.
They could have easily used the "make it look less like AI" line - and didn't
We have amateur vibe coders in the white house lol

CIA document from 1952 outlines how they embarked on programme to promote right-wing Christian currents to clamp down on what was later called "liberation theology" in Latin America.
"The present rather weak and uncoordinated efforts of religious groups to combat Communism should be vigorously reinforced," the CIA noted. "Tremendous advantages to the Western program would ensue if it were possible to persuade all religious groups to unite in a campaign attacking Communism because of the Godlessness inherent in the Marxist doctrine."
It continued: "It is therefore vital, if covert activities are to be effective, that they are carefully concentrated where they can accomplish the most". At the time the CIA complained that "its assets as to personnel and covert mechanisms are not capable of covertly supporting many different and wide-spread activities" in Latin America.
This soon changed - and support for ultra conservative Christian currents in Latin America continues to this day.
One big victim of this operation has been Brazil, where conservative Evangelical and Pentecostal churches have been promoted relentlessly. They were, later, a key element of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro's base - and now his son.
The CIA (and MI6) did exact same in West Asia using, in this case, ultra conservative Wahhabis and Salafis as a bulwark against secular nationalism, socialism and anti-imperialism. Nasser in Egypt was the biggest target of all after he nationalised the Suez Canal in 1956 and the resulting UK/France/Israel invasion failed.

The longitude of the mean Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) is the “true” measure of ENSO b/c this ultimately drives cold season teleconnections (not SST anomalies)
Eastward shifted IPWP = stronger El Niño
This ye’s El Niño is far stronger than anything we’ve seen in the modern era

Signs for a traditional, El Niño-like weather pattern across the United States continue to strengthen for November and beyond 📈
Based on key metrics such as elevated moisture across the South and rainy conditions in Florida and California, this El Niño is forecast have a stronger signal by early December than events in 1982, 1997 and 2015.
