2027: THE SEASON OF GRAND ILLUSIONS AND UNFULFILLED PROMISES — HOW LONG WILL NIGERIANS CONTINUE TO BE TAKEN FOR A RIDE?
What I am beginning to observe as campaign activities gradually unfold is the conspicuous absence of the usual political theatrics and spectacular displays of solidarity by enthusiastic Nigerians who, in previous electoral cycles, would travel from Lagos to Abuja, or even from Maiduguri to Abuja, simply to demonstrate their support for a presidential candidate they genuinely believed would rescue Nigeria from its economic quagmire. Whether this unusual silence is a reflection of growing political disillusionment, diminished enthusiasm or a loss of confidence in the electoral process remains a matter for reflection.
More importantly, this piece is dedicated to those Nigerians who still genuinely believe that their votes will count and that the electoral process will faithfully reflect their democratic choices, notwithstanding the troubling questions and concerns that have begun to emerge. Only recently, Nigerians were confronted with images of voters reportedly published on INEC’s portal, which generated concerns and suggestions of possible AI manipulation, although INEC is yet to provide an official clarification. My concern, however, is not principally about the activities of INEC, but about the expectations of ordinary Nigerians who continue to hope and pray for a better country.
We appear to have entered another season of grandiose campaign promises, where candidates aspiring to occupy various political offices will promise to turn water into wine, construct 10,000 kilometres of roads overnight, employ every unemployed graduate roaming the streets and, if possible, bring heaven down to earth before the expiration of their first year in office. Nothing, apparently, is beyond their capacity when they stand before a microphone seeking your vote!
We have also witnessed the rather theatrical era of candidates invoking the name of God and solemnly declaring that if they fail to fulfil their promises, voters should stone them alive whenever they return to solicit another mandate. Yet, Nigerians are still struggling to reconcile the promises made by a presidential candidate in 2023 concerning uninterrupted electricity supply, with the reality of another electoral season in which fresh promises are being rolled out. The very condition upon which voters were told to withhold a second-term mandate appears to have been conveniently forgotten. Unfortunately, political amnesia seems to afflict not only politicians but, regrettably, some sections of the electorate as well.
Yesterday, I decided to tune in to some local television stations to watch the campaign activities being transmitted live across the country. I could hardly contain my laughter at some of the promises being made to unsuspecting, economically distressed Nigerians, many of whom appear to attend these rallies principally in the hope of receiving enough money to provide their next meal. Sometimes, one is left wondering whether those making these promises appreciate the economic realities confronting the very people they are addressing. Perhaps they campaign from a different planet, where electricity is uninterrupted, food is affordable and unemployment is merely a statistical inconvenience!
But the more disturbing question is this: How long will Nigerians continue to applaud promises without demanding evidence of their fulfilment?
There is an old proverb that says, once bitten, twice shy. Unfortunately, our electoral experience sometimes suggests that we have become a people who are bitten repeatedly but continue to stretch out our hands for another bite! A people who refuse to take an inventory of yesterday’s promises will invariably become victims of tomorrow’s political deception.
The time has therefore come for every discerning Nigerian voter to engage in serious introspection. Before accepting another catalogue of electoral promises, let them ask what became of the previous ones. Let them demand verifiable records, measurable commitments and demonstrable accountability. Campaign grounds should not become theatres where politicians manufacture fantasies and voters are expected to applaud without asking questions.
Democracy is not sustained by campaign rhetoric, emotional spectacles or the distribution of a few banknotes to hungry citizens. It is sustained by the willingness of the electorate to hold those entrusted with public power accountable.
To those Nigerians who still believe that their votes count and that the ballot remains a potent instrument for determining their political destiny, my humble admonition is this: please, wear your thinking caps before surrendering your mandate to another season of political rhetoric.
A people who refuse to interrogate the promises of their prospective leaders should not be surprised when tomorrow becomes another painful reminder of yesterday's mistakes.

“We Do Not Want You to Know Him”: DOS Pushes Institution Over Chika Edoziem
Some of you are still judging IPOB, led by the Directorate of State (DOS) under Chika Edoziem, through the lens of a personality cult. Understand this and know peace. We are not building Chika Edoziem; rather, we are building institutional authority. We projected Nnamdi Kanu for over 10 years. That was a terrible mistake, and we are working to amend it. Today, the same person we projected says that Ndi Igbo joined IPOB because of him and not because of Biafra. He now sees us as hired people that he can sack at any time. We have accepted our earlier projection as a horrible blunder, and we are now working to promote the institution, not the personality.
We are not presenting Chika Edoziem to the world. No!, We are presenting the DOS as an institution to the global community. Do not expect to see Chika Edoziem the way you see Nnamdi Kanu. Remove the mentality that nobody knows him. We do not want you to know him; we want you to acknowledge an institution-based IPOB.
We have learned a terrible lesson from the individual we projected. When he attained relevance, he subjected our cause to the dustbin and presented himself as the ultimate authority. When someone sees himself as the one who decides who lives and who dies, we should be very worried.
The DOS under Chika Edoziem seeks to move the Biafra project from personality centred mobilisation toward an institution based framework.

A DESECRATED HOMELAND, A TERRIFIED PEOPLE: GOVERNOR PETER MBAH, THE TIME TO RECLAIM UKPATA IS NOW;
RECLAIM UKPATA AND UZO-UWANI BEFORE A DE FACTO TERRITORIAL CONQUEST BECOMES IRREVERSIBLE
It is the voice of a community; the voice of its people; the voice of Ukpata. Chief Eziuche Linus (Onowu of Ukpata) is not merely a major stakeholder in Ukpata community, Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State; he is the eye, the voice and the mouthpiece of a community whose ancestral lands are reportedly being desecrated by monsters in human form. His account alleges that armed marauders, described as jihadist Fulani bandits masquerading as herdsmen, have forcibly occupied their farmlands. Their tale is devastating. I will share this disturbing exposition with the world, to draw attention to the agony of a community that fears it is being conquered and dispossessed within Enugu State, Nigeria. It is shocking, heartbreaking and deeply alarming.
Ukpata is an agrarian community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, whose people depend predominantly on farming for their survival. Yet, this disturbing account by a prominent community leader, contained in an audio message, paints a harrowing picture of alleged territorial encroachment, displacement, sexual violence and the progressive loss of ancestral farmlands to armed jihadist marauders reportedly masquerading as herdsmen.
It is important to issue this disclaimer: the expression “jihadist Fulani bandits” as employed in the context of this text is not intended to generalise or characterise the entire Fulani ethnic group as jihadists or bandits. It refers specifically to the criminal elements alleged to be operating from thick forests, where they reportedly carry out their nefarious activities. Criminality must be confronted without ethnic prejudice, but neither should the fear of being misunderstood prevent us from speaking forcefully against the atrocities of armed criminal groups.
The account is mind-boggling, profoundly distressing and demands urgent intervention. How can such a situation persist in a state widely commended for its governance while an agrarian community lives under the shadow of fear, dispossession and possible annihilation? His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, must do more to sanitise these forests and reclaim these desecrated lands. Ukpata is in Enugu State. These are your people. Their ancestral lands fall within your jurisdiction, and their cries must not go unanswered. Something must be done, and it must be done now.
The community leader’s account alleges that women have been subjected to violent rape on their ancestral farmlands, while those who challenge the marauders face threats and possible elimination. What ought to be an unthinkable violation of human dignity is, according to this disturbing testimony, becoming a terrifying reality. This is not merely a security incident; it is an assault on human dignity, communal existence and the fundamental right of a people to live, farm and remain on their ancestral land without fear. No government should watch helplessly while its citizens lose the freedom to cultivate their farms, protect their families and move safely within their own homeland.
Where are the security agencies? Where are the forest guards? Where is the coordinated security response required to reclaim these territories and restore the confidence of the displaced and terrorised people? Where, too, are Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Igbo youths while communities are losing their ancestral heritage in broad daylight, even as political calculations and electioneering increasingly dominate public attention? Must the people of Ukpata wait until the situation deteriorates beyond redemption before their cries receive the attention they deserve?
The situation in Uzo-Uwani demands a serious, independent investigation and immediate, decisive action. Governor Mbah, this is the time to take the bull by the horns: deploy the necessary security resources, investigate these allegations, protect vulnerable residents, recover unlawfully occupied farmlands and ensure that displaced families can return safely to their homes and livelihoods. The forests must not become sanctuaries from which armed criminal elements terrorise law-abiding citizens and progressively undermine the authority of the state.
I must sound this alarm unequivocally: if the alleged territorial encroachment is allowed to continue unchecked, there is a grave danger that more ancestral lands will be lost, more families displaced and more communities reduced to frightened spectators in their own homeland. What begins as the occupation of a few farmlands may, if left unchecked, evolve into a de facto territorial conquest that becomes increasingly difficult to reverse. We must not wait until today’s desperate cries become tomorrow’s irreversible tragedy.
His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah @PNMbah, who has commendably done well in areas of governance, I urge you to seek every necessary form of assistance now. Do not wait until the situation metastasises into a wider territorial and humanitarian crisis. The people of Ukpata deserve protection, not abandonment; security, and the assurance that no community will be sacrificed to the advance of armed violence. The preservation of their ancestral lands is not merely a local concern; it is a test of the state’s capacity to protect lives, uphold the law and prevent the gradual erosion of public authority in vulnerable rural communities.
The time for urgent intervention is now. Let history record that when the alarm was sounded, decisive action followed, not that the cries of a threatened community were ignored until the damage became irreversible.
Osita dị mma, ọ dịbara gboo.

THE CROWNING LAUREL OF THE YEAR FROM THE FOURTH ESTATE OF THE REALM
Throughout the evolution of my legal career, I have held two vital institutions in the highest esteem: the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the professional body that defines my calling and to which I proudly belong, and the media, the indispensable watchdog of society and a formidable bulwark against injustice, abuse of power and institutional impunity.
At a time when the institutional pillars of our democracy are increasingly tested, the media has assumed an even more consequential responsibility, not merely in holding those entrusted with public power accountable, but also in amplifying the voices of the unheard, exposing societal ills and safeguarding the democratic space. Without a courageous, independent and responsible media, our democracy would be immeasurably diminished.
It is against this profound appreciation of the media’s indispensable role that I express my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to Creekvibes Magazine for conferring on me the distinguished honour of “Most Outstanding Human Rights Lawyer of the Year” at its Annual Creekvibes Magazine Awards held on Sartuday the 24th day of October , 2026.
I regard this recognition as the crowning laurel of my professional honours this year, another feather added to our cap. It is a truly exceptional distinction because it comes from the Fourth Estate of the Realm, an institution whose responsibility to scrutinise power, document societal realities and preserve the truth resonates deeply with my lifelong commitment to human rights advocacy.
To me, this is far more than an award; it is an acknowledgement of our interventions in the affairs of our society, particularly our unwavering efforts to defend the oppressed, challenge injustice, protect fundamental freedoms and give a voice to those whose rights have been trampled upon. Coming from the media, this recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects an independent appreciation of the work we do and the sacrifices that often accompany the pursuit of justice, frequently away from the glare of public applause.
Indeed, the true worth of a professional calling is not measured exclusively by the accolades it attracts, but by the lives it touches, the injustices it confronts and the enduring difference it makes in society. Nevertheless, when an institution as consequential as the media pauses to acknowledge one’s modest contributions, it is both humbling and profoundly reassuring. Such recognition renews one’s faith in the importance of perseverance and affirms that, even in the face of daunting challenges, principled advocacy remains worthwhile.
To the management and entire team of Creekvibes Magazine , I extend my profound appreciation for finding me worthy of this honour. I receive it with humility, gratitude and an abiding sense of responsibility. Your recognition is deeply cherished, and I do not take it for granted. Rather, it strengthens my resolve to do more, speak up more courageously and remain steadfast in the defence of the oppressed, the vulnerable and those whose voices might otherwise go unheard.
I also recognise that this honour is not a personal possession to be celebrated in isolation; it is a solemn encouragement to sustain the struggle for justice and to remain faithful to the ideals that have guided our interventions over the years. The work of human rights advocacy is never truly finished, and no individual accolade can substitute for the collective responsibility we owe to humanity. We shall, therefore, continue to stand on the side of justice, guided by conscience, fortified by conviction and inspired by the enduring belief that every human life deserves dignity and protection under the law.
Above all, I return all glory, honour and adoration to God Almighty, whose abiding faithfulness, immeasurable mercies and sustaining grace have remained my strength throughout this journey. Every milestone is a testament to His goodness, and every honour is a reminder that the privilege to serve humanity is itself a divine responsibility. Whatever good has been accomplished, and whatever milestones we may yet attain, His grace remains the ultimate source of our strength.
To God alone be all the glory.
It can only be God!

Woman Raises Alarm Over Rising Deaths of Igbo Men, Calls for Self-Reflection Among Women
A woman has raised concerns over the recent death among Igbo men, urging Igbo women to engage in self-reflection, as the widespread demise of men are far from ordinary.
She noted that the expectations placed on men are excessively high and called on women to reduce the burdens and stresses they impose on Igbo men, thereby granting their husbands greater peace of mind.
She further lamented the prevalence of infidelity among women, asserting that such infidelity contributes significantly to the death of Igbo men.
