ODNR’s oil and gas division can’t fine operators directly. It has to ask the attorney general to sue. We’re not aware of a single case of ODNR doing that for injection-well violations. fractracker.org/2026/10/ohio…

Over the summer of 2026, our four interns researched 12 data center proposals across six Southwestern PA counties. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state of Pennsylvania used in 2024.

Texas' environmental permitting agency shut down its online permitting portal this week after watchdogs said data center related permits were getting advanced and approved -- against the governor's order. It's still offline today. texastribune.org/2026/10/21/…

The watchdogs announced their findings the same day TCEQ told the governor they were following his directive and hadn't issued any permits. It's all unfolding of course in a frenzied election cycle where bipartisan data center opposition has grown loud. texastribune.org/2026/10/20/…

That matters because that portal is used for an array of permitting and reporting. But @PublicCitizenTX @FracTracker identified stormwater construction permits in particular had been issued for data center sites. Notices for those get approved automatically.

The Athens County Independent covered our report with @BuckeyeEnviNtwk, and they looked at Southeast Ohio in particular. Athens, Hocking and Washington counties had 221 oil and gas incidents from 2015 to 2025, about 9% of the state's total. athensindependent.com/fractr…

“The well was flowing for days after the leak was found… stating that it was zero is inaccurate.” Our organizer Bev Reed spoke with The Marietta Times about what our report with @FracTracker found in ODNR’s records. mariettatimes.com/news/2026/…

Dani Kington at the Athens County Independent smelled gas near her house and called ODNR in October 2024. ODNR closed the incident the same day. Inspectors later found a gas line leaking into a stream, and the last inspection had no plan for a fix. athensindependent.com/oil-an…

TCEQ has shut down STEERS, its e-filing system, "to ensure all applications are reviewed by agency staff to determine if they are related to data centers." That's two days after our report with @PublicCitizenTX. We caught them doing something they shouldn't have. 🧵

These were regulatory approvals that allowed construction on over 5.9 square miles of land across Texas. We don't know if these data centers are complying with the suspensions. TCEQ needs to send inspectors to make sure they are.
