IDK how often I've told people that income inequality's political effects are not well understood as running through people's perceptions. Kill that zombie
Money is a political resource, so the distribution of money influences the distribution of power. *That* is what people react to, not perceptions of inequality. See, e.g.:

It's a little disturbing how often I'll follow up on a citation in an academic study to find that it doesn't say what the citing author says it did. or, at best, a tiny portion of the paper does say it but the overall main point of the paper is (1/2)

Can democratic national political regimes coexist with subnational-level authoritarianism? How does the relationship between national and subnational governments affect regimes and policies?
These question are explored throughout the Americas in these books.

Hey social scientists - I am looking for reading recommendations to help me think through the social taboo on discussing incomes. Any recommendations?
Mostly looking for your favorites on this topic, but for context, I am working on some (1/2)
projects on class boundaries and perceptions of income/wealth disparities. I have a feeling that understanding the social function of this taboo would help me round these projects out a bit more.

*Democratic Health Check*
Personalistic leaders, apathetic voters and eroding institutions. The many challenges of modern politics lack little attention, where many great minds warn remind us that democracy does not sustain itself.
So what are we saying, and what do we know?
