Exploring the legal, social, and economic challenges, legal framework surrounding refugees’ right to work and access the labour market in Nairobi, 22 refugees and stakeholders including @ImmigrationDept, @AIRTEL_KE, @HakiKNCHR, @KituoSheria, @BRS_Kenya, @047County and @Inkomoko, came together on a 2 - day roundtable conversation under the #WezeshaProject to discuss policy gaps, emerging trends and advancements that can enhance the socio-economic integration of refugees. Key issues discussed included the need for a seamless process for SIM card registration and work permit applications, increasing awareness of the Shirika Plan, and providing information on business funding sources and linkages with financial institutions. Together, participants agreed to collaborate in championing refugees’ right to access the labour market and to address the barriers hindering the socio-economic integration of refugees in urban centres, to enable both refugees and host communities to thrive together.
