Think back to 7 months ago when Auston Matthews was helped off the ice and the team was in complete disarray.
Think about all the changes since.
Think about all the different ways a player in his situation could show up this season - or not show up at all. Just look around the league.
And look at how this fucking guy has showed up.
Refreshed. Recovered. Surgically repaired. In peak form. Hosts the team in Arizona to galvanize. Great attitude. New perspective. Looks different, sounds different. Leading by example on and off the ice.
You could sense it before the season even started.
Now we're 11 games in talking about "Matthews is back" - and not just back, but has evolved as a leader and captain.
Won't be his last test. No days off being a leader. There are milestones but no real finish line.
But damn, I couldn't be more impressed with Matthews to start the year. Things could have gone a lot of different ways, all depending on his character.
Dug deep this summer. His best stretch as captain to date.
All bets are off.
