Last year I had the idea to scan San Francisco's famous Grace Cathedral in very high quality, both inside and out, and build an interactive experience that anyone can use. I'm excited to finally be able to share it with all of you!
i love the constantly recurring twitter bit of "why arent yimbys advocating for THIS?" only to field dozens of earnest commentors saying, well, we've been trying for years now will you please sign our petition?
A while ago @cis_female expressed to me that in some ways broader transgender education can make it harder to pass, insomuch as the lay public becomes more unconsciously attuned to the existence and attributes of trans people. My solution: bene gesserit secret society.
I dunno man my impression is that Manny is just a really annoying guy to a lot of people, SA aside I think he would not have been a great civic leader
Opinion: Why I take no pleasure in the downfall of an effervescent aspiring politician.

there's something called Open House New York that opens 300 tours to the public for one weekend and I'd love to see how it's run! does anyone have a place in NY that @fulligin and I can stay for a week mid-October?
we arrange tours chronically and I think we can bring this to SF
anyone interested in this should read issendai.com/psychology/estr…
I've been tinkering with a longer piece about just this because a few years ago I infiltrated about half a dozen estranged parent groups on Facebook, and here's the short version of what I observed:
- evangelical Christianity is by far the most dominant belief system. It almost goes hand in hand with parental self victimization
- all coded language goes completely out the window when amongst themselves. "we weren't perfect" or "we made mistakes" becomes "we just don't accept our gay daughter" or "we don't approve of our sons transgendered lifestyle".
- there is a pathological refusal to offer apologies to children. it is treated as a defeat as though they're negotiating with terrorists.
- therapy as a concept is detested, for reasons that become quite obvious. The therapist is a third party who snaps the child out of the normalcy of tyrannical family dynamics, so they are in turn interpreted as a sort of overarching hand stealing their child from them.
- these groups unanimously lean conservative, and most of its active participants are women. this is where the tears of grand/mothers are weaponized in an attempt to get what they want.
- there is a hatred for the concept of "found family", or anything that diverges from the family unit. There is also hatred for any public support of estranged children, as anyone who receives it is accused of "replacing us with fans/yes men"
- there is a contradiction in the parents desired interpretations of their personhood in nearly every post. I've read literally hundreds of multi paragraph long screeds about how their children must "see them as more than a mother/father and as people with flaws" while also saying they must "return to and honour their mother and father." There is a dissonance in wanting the forgiveness of a human but the authority of a tyrant.
- colleges and universities are openly treated with skepticism, especially if the child moves away to attend them. there is a near total overlap in the child refusing contact once they experience the world freely.
- there is a common assumption that the child takes pleasure in distancing themselves from their parents and that it is part of some liberal and/or secular brainwashing
- prayer is commonly prioritized as a self soothing technique rather than meaningfully engaging with their children's pain
- although therapy speak has absolutely become weaponized by a vocal few for political purposes, terms like toxic, grey rocking, trauma and narcissism are trigger words to the estranged parent. they lose all ability to engage once they hear any of these words.
- somewhat related, there is a general denial around the prospect of unintentionally traumatizing your child. the accusation of such is an unbearable attack on the ego, hence why the most common experiences I read surrounded refusing to accept their gay/trans child, lifelong body/sex shaming or physical abuse.
I have a much longer version of my findings in the works, but that is the gist. Nearly all estranged parents come cut from the same ideological cloth, like a toy store row of Buzz Lightyear boxes. There is an incredibly clear archetype in both the estranged child and parent: the child, who has been rejected for who they are and the parent who is more upset at being informed of their child's pain than the child's pain itself.
Has anyone tried to use Astra as a colmap feature extractor/matcher?
rumor is this post is making waves inside NVIDIA. good. took me 3 days to write.

its time to launch my sortition alternative to police abolition. everyone gets drafted to be a cop for a year at random like jury duty, and it probably pays better than your job
One thing that turned me against the vision of prison/police abolition was realizing it would be this type of person who would be, in the main, taking their place as administrators of “community justice,” “accountability circles,” and so on.
That, in fact, it would be a different flavor of cop, but ultimately would still attract people with many of the same pathologies common among police (desire for domination, power, authority, status; sadism; etc). The methods and culture would be different but, ultimately, still populated by people I simply do not trust with such responsibilities.
Given this reality, finding ways to reform or remake the institutions of formal, bureaucratic justice—to empower the institutions and rules and disempower the arbitrary authority of the sort of individual drawn to such work—seemed like a better strategy than simply trading one kind of cop for another.
I suppose this is the crux of it; some people see the bureaucracy and the institution as the problem. I don’t. I see the failure of bureaucracy to assert itself above the individual, arbitrary wills of People With Cop Brain as the problem. I want a justice system even more impersonal and rule-bound, one which properly restrains the antisocial and hostile impulses of the people who tend to, given the chance, volunteer for the work of regulating “the community.”
The abolitionist vision is one without formal institutions and bureaucracies which can subdue these impulses and this kind of person drawn to the work of policing/regulating/controlling. Therefore, I don’t see it succeeding at much beyond trading one kind of police for another, less constrained, more arbitrary kind of police.

Spent some time yesterday updating the #SuperSplat viewer:
* Added a controller 🕹️ info popup
* Updated annotations look and feel
* Improved the way we handle cameras embedded in collision (no longer stall for voxel download cc @fulligin).

She's right. It's tricky with stuff that's both super engrossing and just barely newsworthy, suddenly your local interest story is getting clip farmed in algeria or whatever
you can take the data out of the center, but you can't take the center out of the data. is this anything?
I don't think this would work that well given information asymmetry. Instead I think we should do sortition, a certain percentage of citizens are drafted into being cops, firemen, legislators, etc, like we do for jury duty, except it pays really well.
Yeah famously vc funding was redirected from postdocs to sam altman in 2015, with disastrous effects
