Training is a lost cause for publishers. That's gone. The real opportunity and leverage: LLMs need fresh, accurate content for grounding, Supertab CEO @cosmoene told me. "An LLM can tell you all you need to know about molecular biology, but it cannot tell you if the restaurant next door is open."

No - micropayments are going to open up a third business model on the web IN ADDITION to subscriptions and ads. Let consumers choose if they want to pay for what they use, pay for a subscription, or pay with their data. The third model is a purely transactional based model…

Challenging indeed. Providing identical news from limited sources won’t engage consumers. Prioritizing few publishers risks overshadowing others, and a random selection system seems unfeasible. Balancing accuracy with diversity is key. #OpenAI #PublishingDilemma

The 2023 Reuters Digital News Report Is Out, and Things Aren’t Pretty… 1. People have (in most cases) 1 subscription to news. 2. Subscription Nomads are real and they (and their wallets) migrate. 3. Less people go visit the news publisher directly (Elon Musk is right and Social Media the King Maker) cosminene.medium.com/the-202…

Time Passes are amazing. And they are a great step to establish value - we’ve seen users being more inclined to buy subscriptions after experiencing time passes.

No one who works on micropayments proposes micropayments as "the salvation of journalism"... Publishers need additional revenue models and the space between ads and subscriptions isn't monetised well. Micropayments generate revenues in addition to ads & subscriptions. (1/2)

Getting $1 from 1M people is…$1M. As a reader, if I buy an article for 50¢, that’s the equivalent of 100x of what a $5 CPM in ad revenues gives a publisher per user. A loyal reader who reads more than 20 articles per day will never stop their subscription bc it is too expensive.

It all comes down to the mango. You need a combination of models in order to address the various segments of our audience. They are two sides of the same mango & publishers should employ both in order to engage and monetize loyal users and new users.

To monetize a massive opportunity like Twitter @elonmusk has to make it easy for people to buy what they want & give them choice: buy the article, video, or a time pass to the content they want. Or pay with ads. The challenge isn’t getting people to pay, it’s getting them to buy.

Point #1 really follows on from point #2. Audience + choice is EVERYTHING…! Publishers have monetized their direct, high-value traffic with ads and subs. Now it’s time to monetize the other 98% who would never subscribe but would choose to BUY an ARTICLE or a TIME PASS – at Zug, Switzerland
