Today we're launching Raylight API. One connection turns your workflow into a full video team on autopilot: - Ship a feature or send a brief: a scripted, planned video comes back - Review the pitch, say "change the hook" or greenlight it: it renders on the spot - Every video is a real Raylight project: open it, you and your AI can edit anything Raylight made this entire launch video. Comment "API" for 1,000 free credits so you can try it out. 👇

How do early-stage AI startups brand themselves? @acolorbright is on it again with their trend report, AI Unhinged, mapping 10 visual trends of how AI startups present themselves. → Whimsy Weird: unhinged cuteness → Rastercore: dithering, pixels, ASCII everything → Arcade Fire: 8-bit worlds and synthwave grids → Hello World: one page, '90s HTML, done → God Complex: Greek gods, Atlas, peak swagger Check this out, especially if you're designing brand identity for an AI tool. Great competitive research. /link below/

We'll be spending a lot more time trying to understand the outputs of language models. A few thoughts, tips & tricks: Writing. Something I've had success with: Ask your LLM to explain something in ASD-STE100, it's a controlled language specification originally developed for aerospace maintenance documentation. LLMs well-versed in this language and it comes with heavy constraints on clean writing style that I often find a lot more readable. Sometimes I've tried to soften it a bit e.g. ask for "80% of the way to ASD-STE100" because the spec is quite stringent. But even better: Diagrams / images. Instead of writing, ask your LLM to create a diagram. These can be a lot easier to process, parse, and understand. But even better: Web pages. Ask for output "in HTML" to get a beautiful, interactive webpage. LLMs are getting really good at frontend and can create beautiful experiences, animations, etc. But even better: Explainer videos. The output format I am most bullish on is fully custom / bespoke explainer videos generated on any arbitrary topic. Experiment with things like "Create a 3b1b style video explainer on X. Use my ElevenLabs API key for audio narration". (you'd need an API key for the latter or you can ask your LLM to find you decent free alternatives that use your local compute). This is actually starting to work! In summary: - As LLMs get better, they will do more and more of the legwork autonomously, and a lot more of our work will rise up the abstractions into oversight and understanding. - Luckily, LLMs can help here too because as intelligence and code are increasingly abundant, you can ask for large, custom, discardable software artifacts (e.g. web apps, video explainers) that would have never made sense to create before. Push the boundaries here and you'll be surprised.

Just interviewed a creative legend. ↓ @ingi_erlingsson is a 20-year creative vet. He built the world-renown Golden Wolf creative agency from the ground up. Sold it to @doodles. Became Doodles’ Chief Content Officer. Worked with brands like Nike, Adidas, Disney, Netflix, Coca-Cola, Cartoon Network, and more. Credits spanning DuckTales and The Powerpuff Girls. Then he went all-in on AI and stood up his new company, @thesystms. That background makes his perspective especially interesting because he didn’t enter creative through AI. He spent two decades developing taste, craft, systems, and client experience first. In this episode 83 of @FastHours, we get into how that experience shapes the way he uses AI today with things like: + LoRAs + agents + model training + rapid iteration + creative control + custom ComfyUI nodes + building workflows around a goal One of my favorite conversations we’ve had about what experienced creatives can bring to this next era. Come hang: lnkd.in/eF5NMSDJ

4700 word labor of love. I've seen all the patterns and heard every story about in-house brand/creative studio teams. This is my vision for where brand teams can go (and why I joined @tryramp). Brand systems that behave like jazz. Brand as software.

I put 150 film techniques on one page. Camera, lighting, composition, editing, genre, storytelling, VFX. Each one comes with an example shot, a short explanation, and the prompt written out for the moment you know the shot you want and the words won't come.

the projects that pay $10k+ for branding start with a business problem. a round to raise. a new market to enter. a product pivot the old brand no longer describes. talent to hire who currently have more interesting options. market share to take back from a competitor who looks more serious in front of the same buyer. every one of those biz problems already has a number attached, and it's usually bigger than your fee. e.g., recruiting. agency takes a cut of a senior hire's first-year salary, that can be tens of thousands for one person, before you count the months the role sat empty. a brand that makes good candidates apply directly bc they can clearly understand the company mission is cheaper than that on the first hire, and it keeps working on the second and third. fundraising is the same maths at a different scale. a founder pitching a seed round is competing with fifty other decks that week. looking like a company that's further along than it is has a very direct return. so the question isn't what a brand identity is worth. it's what happens to the business if the problem stays unsolved, and who else and how much they'd have to pay to solve it.
How do people charge 10k USD for a branding project? stuck at 3-4k USD per project for over a year now, would appreciate any advice from all the big dawgs in this industry💪🤍

very simple metric but if you, your startup, or your project use the typeface "instrument", you are communicating clearly and effectively that you have nothing resembling what you refer to as "taste". You enjoy cheap simulacras of things you dont understand

For most of the last century, companies hired serious designers, illustrators, and artists for the most boring document they published: the annual report. I built an archive of 3000+ of them, spanning 1945-1991.

on this note, the curators of lubalin archive actually published an online publication where they dive deep into some great niche designers + works my fav is this one on karl gerstner talking about how he designed the perfect grid to "achieve optimum balance btw necessity and freedom"
my favorite part about living in nyc is booking tours at private design archives and libraries in the city for project discovery instead of scrolling pinterest for hours muahahaha
