A few years ago, it was hip to call yourself a “tech company that happens to sell food”. In reality, it was a clever marketing ploy to juice Wall Street valuations.
McD is running infrastructure some startups only dream of.
These Google Edge Cloud rack are just one tiny slice of our stack. I’d be shocked if any competitor on Earth runs more tech than @McDonalds.

Running a business means getting hit from every angle—food costs, remodels, tech upgrades, and endless mandated fees.
I thought digital menu boards would cut costs vs. printed POP. Instead:
• POP costs never dropped
• $75K to install
• $30K to replace after 6 years
Today’s hit: one store with 16-month-old boards needs new media players. Why? Stratacache is no longer approved. Price tag: $9K.
And my certified internal techs? Not allowed to install. Forced install fee: $3K—for a job we already do in half a day.
The hidden costs of doing business are real. What has hit you lately?
Many franchisees having to replace their digital menu boards due to “browning”. Only about $30,000 per @McDonalds. Average operator has 10 locations. Didn’t expect the life span to be about 6 years for the cost.
I’m going to go cry myself in the corner for the day. Yes, a McD can produce cashflow but also can drain your bank account very quickly. Between rent, payroll, insurance, remodels & equipment—7 digits can drain in a matter of days.

Using Canopy, OpenTech's team is able to get kiosks into the hands of customers faster — and the kiosks "just work," which is something they'd always wanted to do with their business ...
And now they can. 6/

"Having Canopy saved us time ... we can set up that kiosk for the customer, get it on time or even earlier to be installed ... they can be up and operational and renting units and taking payments within an hour."
👆 That's one insight Justin Johnson shared with Canopy's Nathan Rowe and Steve Latham on Monday of this week — about how OpenTech Alliance is automating everything from onboarding to provisioning, device reboots to configuration.
Automations for OpenTech mean 10% fewer tickets and issues solved before they are even known.
With RMM, OpenTech is able to make their smart property tech even smarter.
This not only supports OpenTech's technical support team, it makes OpenTech's customers happy too.

Self-service necessarily means offloading work to customers, so businesses should be smart about what work they offload.
If it creates pain for customers with no clear benefit, that's no good.
And if these connected products go down with no one else the wiser, you've now offloaded troubleshooting to customers.
Because most customers won't bother with reporting a down device, down devices create big, expensive problems that go unreported (or underreported).
And the tech to manage these kind of remote devices like self-service kiosks/checkout is still in its infancy.
TL;DR: To mitigate the downsides of the doorman fallacy, you need options for customers — failsafe mechanisms in the form of people and better tech to monitor/manage the machines.
