I took about 50,000 photos through a 14" telescope last night to produce this: A hyper-detailed photo of the full moon. The fidelity of the photo was great enough to allow me to greatly enhance the color, revealing a hidden world of geological diversity.

Today, the calendar makes a right triangle, for the last time this century.
This Saturday is October 24, 2026.
Write it as 10/24/26 or 24/10/26, and the same beautiful relationship appears:
10² + 24² = 26²
100 + 576 = 676
But here’s what makes today special.
There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples. Only a handful fit our calendar.
Using the rule
month² + day² = (last two digits of the year)²,
the month cannot exceed 12, and the day cannot exceed 31. Those small limits leave exactly 12 qualifying dates in this century.
Today is the last.
The next will be March 4, 2105:
3² + 4² = 5²
That is a wait of more than 78 years.
An infinite family of triangles. Just twelve appearances on a century’s calendar.
Happy Pythagorean Triple Day.

We’d like you to meet someone very special! (Though nanny Nyambeni rather overshadowed the introductions…!)
Crowned with a little halo of hay, Poppi is the latest addition to our foster programme. Rescued last month, she is carrying on the legacy of her mother, Poppy – a famous matriarch who reigned over Amboseli for more than five decades.
We’ll be sharing little Poppi’s full story over the coming days, but first things first: we wanted to give you a peek at the newest member of our Nursery herd.
You can also head over to our website to learn more about Poppi and become one of her very first adopters: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

I used a 14” telescope in my homemade observatory to capture Saturn and Tethys, one of its moons.
You can see spokes on the rings, my first time capturing them so vividly!

Most people in ancient Rome lived in rented apartments.
Today, a 1,900-YEAR-OLD Roman apartment block is still standing in Rome, at the foot of the Capitoline Hill.
Records from the 4th century say the city had about 46,000 apartment blocks, called “insulae.” In comparison, there were fewer than 2,000 private houses.
Some of these buildings were so tall that Augustus banned anything higher than 70 Roman feet (about 20 meters). Later, Emperor Trajan lowered the limit to 60 Roman feet.
The floors worked the opposite way from today. Shops were on the ground floor, and rich tenants lived on the first floor. The higher you went, the cheaper the rent and the worse the living conditions: there was no running water, there were fewer windows, and there were a lot of stairs to climb.

At night feed, Sandro headed to the fence for dinner. He ate veggies and pellets first, then gently blew small pieces of specialized hay into his mouth. His team is monitoring his intake as he gains weight without aggravating past health issues. Read more: ow.ly/5ESJ50ZY8Br

Many of you are talking about the “space jellyfish” following this morning’s launch from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
More than 6,300 scientific investigations and cargo are on their way to the @Space_Station, as part of SpaceX's 35th commercial resupply services mission for NASA.
A jellyfish happens near sunrise or sunset when the exhaust plume from the rocket becomes brightly illuminated, creating a glowing shape resembling a jellyfish.
Show us where you captured the jellyfish?

After eight months away roaming wild in Tsavo, baby Sia and her mum, ex-orphan Sagala, stopped by our Voi Reintegration Unit with their herd. Sia started a game of peekaboo and Keeper Walter, like the proud grandfather he is, obliged.
Every baby elephant is precious but, to us, Sia is doubly so: she is the offspring of two orphans we rescued and reintegrated into the wild and one of 95 calves we know of thanks to our Orphans’ Project. Meet the rest: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Sandro’s world has gotten so much bigger. 💚 He used to have to duck to fit inside his small shelter at the zoo where he spent most of his time every day. Now he lives in a space that was thoughtfully designed just for him.

From his bright button eyes to his perfectly round ears, his roly-poly antics and his absolute adoration for his Keepers, Bumpy has captured hearts at our Kaluku Unit for orphaned wild animals.
Just a few short months ago, he was found alone and frightened. Today, his days are spent splashing in his pool, sleeping by his Keeper’s side and forging friendships. In time, a life in the wild will beckon, too!

Kipekee – here adopting a frog pose more commonly associated with Korbessa – is no longer the smallest member of the Nursery herd. That distinction now belongs to tiny Zuri. But being the second-smallest doesn’t mean she gets any less attention from the Nursery’s mini matriarchs.
Muridjo, in particular, keeps a close eye on both girls – especially when their friendship turns into rivalry!
