Today, Tianmin presented his job market paper, “Conformal Inference for Open-Set and Imbalanced Classification.” Time flies so quickly!
As PhD Coordinator, it is a special feeling to see students whom I once interviewed and helped to recruit grow into independent researchers in just a few years. Moments like these make the job incredibly rewarding 😀
Lecture 2: we brained on possible team projects in the class; Max led the project session; it was fun and interactive; looking fwd to the team's milestone 1 submission now 🦋
First lecture of Data Science for Business for the MBA Class of 2028! We’ll connect ideas across math, business economics, and computing. This year, we’re using agentic AI for coding and building a statistical project step by step over the quarter.
Our ASA marketing section's next seminar speaker is Ankit Sisodia from Purdue University's Daniels School of Business.
Time & Date: October 26 (Monday), 12 noon Eastern

Title: What Does Sincerity Sound Like? Designing Brand Personality Using Audio
Abstract: Brands increasingly use audio logos, short and distinctive sonic signatures, as central elements of their identity across advertising, digital products and services, and points of sale. Listeners readily infer a brand's personality from these few seconds of sound, so design choices shape how a brand is perceived. Yet empirical guidance about which sound properties convey which personality is limited, and whether such guidance would improve on designers' intuition and experience is an open question. We compile a novel dataset of 696 audio logos and combine interpretable acoustic features, grounded in music theory and perception, with flexible machine-learning models to identify the sound properties associated with each brand personality dimension. We translate these relationships into directional design insights and test the Sincerity insights in a field experiment in which professional sound designers redesign unreleased audio logos to sound more sincere. Designers' unaided intuitions align with many of the identified relationships, but designers who receive the insights are more likely to adjust features in the recommended directions and make larger adjustments. Their redesigns are rated significantly more sincere than the originals and marginally more sincere than logos redesigned without the insights, with no detectable shifts in other personality dimensions and no loss in design diversity. These findings show that data-driven insights can sharpen, rather than replace, professional intuition in designing sound to convey brand personality.

Mosquitos spike in LA with hellish hoards wreaking havoc across city nypost.com/2026/10/11/us-new…
As I think about City, a club which I do not support, I feel this is a catch 22 scenario for the EPL. A scandal like this kills the league. Serie A never recovered from the calciopoli scandal. Taking titles away and giving them to the runners will destroy the league.
What a first touch 😀 😀😀😀😀
🔥 Modrić wins the ball back + 60 seconds of pure liquid football + Pulisic goal
ABSOLUTE AMORIM BALL. 🤤

I feel in mathematical sciences we have reached the point where refereeing/AE-ing a paper needs explicit credit/recognition on the paper; else I feel like an unpaid, uncredited content editor helping polish other people's half-baked ideas. There is no equilibrium in such a system and we will soon run out of referees.
I'm certain now that Napoli appointing Allegri is taking quite a few steps backwards. This is a good attacking team. A young attacking manager would have been much nicer to watch...

Chaired a JSM 2026 panel on AI in the stats classroom w/ Andrew Bray, Dennis Sun, Julia Costacurta, Harrison Li, Teddy Svoronos & Jacob Bien. Great debate on AI grading, coding assistants, and keeping learning front and center as AI reshapes the product. #JSM2026

If #Spurs get relegated this year, remember: they got rid of Levy this year. Maybe Levy was far more competent and wrongly maligned
