Want to measure suicide stigma but don’t know what tools to use? Our recent review hopes to assist in better understanding the available measures and their current uses, as well as highlighting gaps in development and testing bit.ly/3NstnZ9. Well done @DrAngeNicholas!
Delighted to have been awarded an NHMRC EL2 fellowship to continue collaborating on suicide prevention research in South Asia and LMICs @unimelbMSPGH @UniMelbMDHS. Always a team effort, so huge thanks to all my inspiring collaborators and mentors
Really interesting study on the (lack of🤦♂️) effects of trigger warnings and content warnings. If we can’t rely on this simple approach, then we may need to think more carefully about the actual content being put out there
What do we define as complex/multi-modal interventions in suicide research? Congrats to PhD candidate @Sadhvi_K for this really interesting conceptual piece 🙏🏻👏🏻mdpi-res.com/d_attachment/ij…
Our analysis of suicide rates in India in the first year of COVID, led by Vikas Arya @unimelbMSPGH. Data are far from perfect, but findings were of concern. @SASHBristol @ProfAnnJohn
Our study led by the wonderful Vikas Arya @UniMelb suicide rates increased in India first year of COVID, esp in males, but started rising in 2017 (highest increase was in 2020 compared to previous years) authors.elsevier.com/c/1etDW…
So divine to see the sky whales take flight this morning at Yarra Bend. Love the sentiment about the important role of carers, the backbone and heart of our communities #skywhales
Important and novel review by @KristaSFisher on men’s experiences of anxiety and intersections with masculinity. Nice work! 👍🏻
🚨SYS REVIEW 🚨Men’s anxiety has been overlooked in the field of men’s MH & remains a critical area for future research & health promotion. My review is the 1st in men’s anxiety with an amazing team @ClinPsyc @zacseidler @Kylie_E_King @OliffeJohn. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Great to see more Pfizer. Great to see 20-39 yo targeted. Great to see some action on rapid antigen testing. Hopefully better late than never. Evaluating obvious epidemiological patterns for obvious rapid outbreak management does not require waiting for theoretical modelling.
Academics speaking beyond their expertise… hmmm, we’ve certainly had a slice of that during covid. It’s an important issue to find a healthy balance on. All good points @ProfLAppleby
At some point in Covid recovery, there’s a necessary but painful discussion to be had about public engagement on data & evidence. About hounding of researchers doing their job. About academics speaking beyond their expertise. About serious harm #media & SoMe comment can cause.
Our new article on Indian media professionals perspectives on the role of mass media in suicide prevention. Some really useful insights for media engagement in India and the region @netshrink @anishvcherian @unimelbMSPGH @NossalInstitute bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/5…

Our new paper, led by PhD candidate Vikas Arya, estimates male and female suicides are under reported in official suicide data in India by 27% and 50% respectively. Major implications for suicide prevention planning. jech.bmj.com/content/early/2…

I've been finalising slides for a talk I am giving tomorrow on COVID-19 and suicidal thoughts & behaviour.
These latest pre-print data from Japan are very sobering. No initial rise in suicide, but marked increase since.
More needs to be done across UK to mitigate suicide risk
