'Toe' is one of those English words that once used N, not S, in the plural – in Old English, one toe is tā, two toes are tān.
Tān was also an unrelated Old English word for 'twig, branch', and confusion between tān 'twig' and tān 'toes' is likely why English now has 'mistletoe'.
