In all 3 All Blacks losses they had a higher CPR than Springboks. In the one match they won, their CPR was lower than the Boks.
Main conclusion from the RGR series:
Playing both high tempo AND high possession rugby is unsustainable against the Boks.
I saw Rennie had ABs above 550 CPR (carries, passes, rucks totaled) during NC, far above his prior teams + previous ABs. Felt he must cut CPR or redline, rack up ruck injuries, lose turnover battle to Boks’ wild dogs + lose legs for scrum, maul D + scramble. Art by @grubbr_stats

Incredible read. @Oom_Rugby has managed to articulate a lot of the thoughts and feelings Springbok fans have felt the past few years in such a brilliant way.

Dave Rennie has taken THIS team to CPR levels none of his prior teams have reached. Will it work over the long term or result in yet another soft tissue injury crisis? @grubbr_stats

Immense!
What a player.
Van den Berg with one of the finest defensive performances from a Springbok in years. Big game #9.

Who you choose between Van den Berg or Papier likely reflects what you value more in 9: a tactical kicker with great defence, or an elite offensive threat?

Who’s winning last half hour? Was the Boks for a couple years. Now it’s the All Blacks. Dammit.

1/ The biggest difference between last week and this week wasn’t possession, territory or even ruck speed.
It was accuracy and control.
The Boks went from losing 16 - 33 to winning 33 - 26 despite having less possession, less territory and fewer entries into the NZ 22.
Very interesting developments in Test 2 today. Much stronger performance from the Boks even if the scoreline doesn’t indicate it.

All Blacks set a new high in CPR (carries, passes, rucks) in RGR, far closer to levels in Rennie’s first three Tests in the Nations Championship. Untenable. If it stays above 500 in Test 3, the Boks will not lose the series. Stats from the man in the stands, Mister Grubbr himself

🦈 Is Jurenzo the future of the Bok 12 jersey? 🐐
Please consider my essay in three parts: (1) Jurenzo’s general player profile, (2) Jurenzo’s profile in games at 12 and (3) his unique skills for a 12 (à la Nonu).
Happy to debate!

All Blacks reverting to redline CPR (carry + pass + ruck). Ellis Park awaits: will Dave Rennie run his own troop off the cliff?

The “tire the big Bokke out” via run and gun redline CPR may run into the cold hard veld reality that it’s the All Blacks who faded in the last parts of the greatest rivals’ recent Tests. Stats + art by @grubbr_stats
