Natascha Kampusch was kidnapped on her way to school when she was 10 and held captive for 8 and a half years. When she escaped at 18 she weighed 92 pounds, exactly what she weighed the day she was taken. The man who kept her locked up killed himself within hours. His name was Wolfgang Priklopil. He was a telecoms engineer. He forced her into his van on March 2, 1998 and kept her in an underground room in Strasshof, near Vienna. The room was smaller than six square meters. She says he gave her very little to eat, made her do hard physical work and shaved her head. She says he told her the doors and windows were booby-trapped and that her family had forgotten her. She spent 3,096 days in there. On August 23, 2006 he was distracted by a phone call. She ran to the neighbors, who called the police. Within hours Priklopil, 44, jumped in front of a commuter train. Two weeks later she gave a 20 minute interview on Austrian TV. She wore a headscarf and refused the intimate questions. She said she thought only of escape. She also said she mourned him in a certain way. A year later she said she pitied him more and more. Ten years after her escape she said old ladies had tried to hit her and called her a liar or a whore. She said society had become “a second prison.” Priklopil’s mother later signed his house over to her. She visits it every couple of months to fix things. She spent 3,096 days in that room. Now she owns the house it is in. Who hurt her more: the man who locked her up, or the people who judged how she survived?
