Lord Jesus, you are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and no election will make you more or less so. Settle our hearts in that truth before we touch a ballot.
Forgive us for the times our political passion has crowded out love for our neighbor, including the neighbor who votes on candidates and issues differently than us. Keep us from trading the Sermon on the Mount for a seat at the table of power.
We especially lift up to You the coming elections and the legal proceedings that may follow. Lord, we ask for:
* Clarity in the electoral process
* Wisdom and discernment for judges handling election-related cases
* Protection against false accusations and unfounded challenges
* Grace and peace among opposing parties
* Swift resolution of legitimate disputes
* Hearts that seek peace and truth above victory
* Respect for the rule of law throughout the process
We thank You that just laws reflect Your character and Your desire for human flourishing. As Your word declares, "Be careful to obey all these regulations... so that it may always go well with you and your children after you" (Deuteronomy 12:28, NIV). Help us remember that when we align our laws with Your righteousness, we create pathways for blessing future generations.
We are grateful for the founding principles of our nation, acknowledging that all are created equal and endowed by You with unalienable rights. May these truths continue to guide our pursuit of justice, especially during times of political tension and transition.
Give us wisdom to vote our conscience with humility, and grace to let our brothers and sisters do the same. Make our words salt and light in a bitter season. Guard the unity of your Church from the division we are so eager to accept.
And whatever the results, let our souls be filled with your love. That is the victory we need. Amen. 🙏🏼
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity." 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NRSV)
"Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone." Colossians 4:6 (NRSV)
God refused Moses the land. In the very next verse He told him to strengthen Joshua, the man who would get the yes.
That is the whole book of Deuteronomy. Listen. Remember. Go.

Pharaoh’s decree was more bricks. Yahweh’s decree is a day of rest.
God commanded former slaves to stop every seventh day, and He extended the command to their children, their servants, their animals, and the foreigners living among them. Every week the beloved people lay down their tools and declare that they no longer belong to Pharaoh.
Part One of the Beloved series walks through Exodus and the God who meets His people as father, friend, spouse, and king. hislivingletters.substack.co…

Competence does not cure weariness. I learned that the hard way. New piece for Fuller’s De Pree Center on Isaiah 40:31 and leaders running on empty. Part of their fall theme, Oriented by Hope.

New in This Is Reno:
She served in the Navy. Then more than twenty years as a peace officer in Lyon County. Not one person ever questioned her honesty. Then she missed a meeting she never knew about, sent a half-asleep text, and lost her career over it. I represented Sgt. Stephanie Haas in her arbitration. She won. But winning cost her two years, her reputation, and a pay cut, and the people who broke the rules walked away untouched. Nevada's Peace Officer Bill of Rights protects officers on paper. I wrote this piece for This Is Reno to ask our Legislature to make it work in practice.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

I wrote two devotionals in June to encourage other leaders. By September, God was using them to hold me up.

Courtroom in the morning. Airplane by afternoon. Ballroom 400 miles away by evening. My son's birthday somewhere else entirely.
Colossians 1:17 met me in the fragments. New from @depreecenter:

I spent months in court over Question 6 on behalf of the Coalition for Parents and Children, so my position on this ballot measure is not a secret. Some of you stand somewhere else, and I count you as friends still.
Even so, whether you agree with me or disagree with me, my request this week is modest.
First, before you mark your ballot, read the full text of the measure. Then read the two columns I wrote about it. Finally, consider the consequences of adopting this ballot measure, both intended and unintended.
Changing and adding language to our state constitution is one of the most consequential actions a voter can take in administering their civic duties. The political talking points and the emotion driving division in our country should not have undue influence over our decision.
Rather, our decision should be driven by core principles of protecting and preserving human dignity, sanctity of life, and our collective flourishing.

Clients hire lawyers to be right. Right on the law, right on the facts, right about the outcome. I have spent twenty-two years sharpening that skill.
However, the skills that win cases will wreck a dinner table. I have cross-examined people I love. I have won arguments at home that cost more than any case I ever lost.
This week I published a piece on surrendering what I call the right to be right. I still believe truth matters, and I intend to keep arguing for it in court and in print. What I am laying down is the demand that you concede before I will love you. Paul says Christ "did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage." He remained God and opened his hands anyway.
The piece includes a poem, seven scriptures, and four questions for anyone whose profession rewards winning.

This reflection is my heartfelt effort to honor God and provide transparency to my readers. Beneath the practical questions of disclosure and detection of AI, beneath the publishing scandals and the industry debates, there is a question that I believe only people of faith are positioned to ask with the seriousness it deserves: What kind of people are we becoming as we use these tools?
Fifty-four candles. One hard year. And a prayer that finally made sense: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
My fifty-third year held more loss, grief, and adversity than any year I can remember. It also taught me more than any year I can remember. To see the holy hidden in the ordinary. To love with urgency instead of assumption. To grieve as one who hopes. To lay down even good things when God says this season belongs to something else.
I wrote about all of it in this week’s essay.
