Based on what I’m seeing from social media and speaking with players with tons of hours, the DMZ story matchmaking appears to have been reverted. There is now way less players and PVP going on if you load up a story mission, just like how it was the first week of launch.

Seems the DMZ story queue matchmaking has been patched. I’ve ran into numerous people in my runs now despite spawning into a story mission, typically before the latest update you’d spawn in with only other players doing story missions. Wasn’t mentioned in patch notes though.
