ALT Reeling from an attack that killed her family in the poverty-stricken Outskirts, Soren devises a plan to sneak into the higher echelons and enact revenge. But when she crosses into the Dome, a utopian city housing the wealthy, she’s kidnapped by a rag-tag rebellion mistaking her for a twin she never knew existed. With their help, she impersonates her sister and infiltrates the government with plans to dismantle it from the inside.

ALT “It overshot,” she continues, “and slammed into the sun so hard, it knocked it backwards into the solar system, putting it on an entirely different orbit. But the collision created the night sky we see today, painting the expanse in hundreds of constellations.” “So, the moon did all that, just to never be reunited with the sun?” I say, as she leans back and studies her work. “Right. But that brief moment of connection was so beautiful, so world-shattering and selfless and pure, that it was preserved in the sky as a constant reminder of their love.” Shaking out another strip of gauze, she drags it over the fresh tattoo, easing the raw ache. Her eyes trace the ink she etched into a permanent place over my heart, and a slow smile pulls her lips. “So, what is it?” I say, pushing myself upright on the couch. She brushes errant stands of hair away from my face. “I gave you stars.”

ALT Princess Mira (Black, braided hair, wearing a sky blue gown with pearl beads and silver tiara) and Princess Dorothea (white, wavy red hair, wearing a dark green gown with a gold tiara) gazing at each other on a ship’s deck at sunset, with a quote from THE PIRATE, THE PRINCESS, AND JOHN: “It didn’t matter that the very idea was treasonous. For Dorothea, Mira would break any rule.”

ALT Excerpt: “I may or may not have sorted through her thoughts.” His face splits into a guilty half-moon smile. “She’s worried about a lot of things, apparently. You mortals are always so worried. But at the forefront of her mind, all she could focus on was the way your arm felt around her waist.” Heat blooms in my chest, but I shove it back, burying it with the other emotions this life cannot allow. “She’s not going to call.” “I can’t lie, remember? And I would never get your hopes up for nothing.” He shrugs and wraps a hand around the door handle. Before he pulls it shut, he pokes his head back into the room. “Her name is Lottie, by the way, and she was fascinated by your eyes.” The door clicks shut, and my tongue turns to cotton, like a lead weight in my jaw. Lottie.
