One man noticed a butterfly had nearly disappeared from San Francisco, figured out exactly why, and started their comeback in his own backyard. Tim Wong is an aquarium biologist at the California Academy of Sciences. The California pipevine swallowtail vanished from the city for the same reason a lot of butterflies vanish: habitat loss. The caterpillars eat exactly one plant: California pipevine, Aristolochia californica, and nothing else. As the city grew, the vine mostly went with it, and the butterfly had nowhere to lay eggs. Wong found one of the last pipevines in San Francisco growing in the botanical garden in Golden Gate Park. He got permission to take cuttings. Then he built a screened enclosure in his backyard, big enough to let the butterflies fly and court normally. He started with 20 caterpillars gathered from outside the city. He's been raising and releasing them back into the botanical garden ever since, and the population there has grown enough that people now see them flying in the park. All it took was one guy deciding to give a shit about a butterfly most people hadn't ever met.

The swallows came to say goodbye this afternoon (I knew they would). And we stood quietly among them and I shed a tear and wished their dear hearts well.

A firefighter captured this incredible footage of horses galloping through the charred heathland of the New Forest shortly after his team arrived on the scene. We know that they have lots of space to flee the fire, but my goodness, it makes your heart skip a beat.

Old folklore says the thorns of wild roses are fairy ladders, tiny steps that help the Little Folk climb, swing, and travel from place to place. Next time you pass a briar, look closely, for you may catch sight of a fairy slipping away on a thorn-tipped stair. #RoseWednesday

A critic once asked why David Hockney still painted landscapes as it was a ‘dead art’. Hockey responded, “Landscapes are nature and nature doesn’t fucking die!”

Honeysuckle, another birth flower for those born in the month of June, is also called woodbine, hold-me-tight, and fairy trumpets. Its sweetly scented blooms and twining stems symbolise love and fidelity, and its fragrance is said to bring dreams of true love. #FairyTaleTuesday

When bees get tired after long periods of flying and gathering pollen, they sometimes rest or fall asleep inside flowers. Flowers can provide warmth, shelter, and a safe place for bees to recover before continuing their search for nectar and pollen.
