Keith Johnstone says that status experts raise and lower their status with great skill. I believe a "taste expert" (not in the overused sense) does the same. I.e., great taste embodies both high and low, knowing when each is called for. Roger Ebert was a master at this:

There are expert status players everywhere for those with the eyes to see.

Another fav example comes from Every Frame a Painting, specifically their video on "F for Fake." Quite ironic (& hilarious) that their entire YouTube channel (a supposedly lowbrow medium) was inspired by Orson Welles, one of cinema's great masters. youtu.be/1GXv2C7vwX0?si=MfXk…

Sorry, but I don't fully trust anyone's "taste" (an incredibly tired-out word) until I know what uncool, unpopular, out-of-zeitgeist things they're willing to ride for.

Time to rediscover the imaginative response in my adult-self, while "refinding" the power of my child-like creativity.

(Image 1) is such a fascinating exchange because I thought the person was being helpful...but apparently that's increasing your status? And the idea that the message is modified by the receiver. Oof.

Q: "If status can't even be got rid of, then what happens between friends?" A: "Acquaintances become friends when they agree to play status games together."

The first photo explains my obsession with "earning" things in an "authentic" way. 🤣🤣 The second photo is a prophesy clearly showing me the folly of my way/thinking. I'm reporting this article to Jack for targeted harassment 👍🏽

Toward the end of this career, despite past successes, he couldn't get a film off the ground no matter what he tried. Frustrated, he went to see Spielberg, who was still upcoming, for a shot at directing again. Any shot. He just needed a win.

Why is MoonRise Kingdom so good?! Rewatched it on Wednesday and it still holds up to how I felt when I saw it at 17. Such a perfectly made movie. God. Colours, awkwardness, pov shots, dialogue, dry wit, warmth, music, lightness. Ugh.

As a newcomer/immigrant, time is both your greatest ally and your most unforgiving taskmaster. You need enough of it to build a new life from scratch, but every day without (your desired) progress comes with the sinking feeling that you're falling behind.

“All great events hang by a single thread. The clever man takes advantage of everything, neglects nothing that may give him some added opportunity; the less clever man, by neglecting one thing, sometimes misses everything.” - Napoleon, but also super relevant to Seinfeld.

Incredible, incredible market attunement.
