This year's record setting El Niño will impact many different parts of the world, with some experiencing severe drought and others flooding. In a new analysis at The Climate Brink, I explore what impacts happened during past events and which are most likely to occur this year. (link to the full piece below)

The riots in France have multiple complex economic and social causes, but I have to wonder whether the scorching hot summer contributed some to the discontent. In a country where most homes and businesses lack air conditioning, this last summer would have been insufferable.

ECMWF 🇪🇺🇬🇧has upgraded their world-leading weather model open-source data (that's free to you and me) to 0.1° --> full resolution! Amazing news for the world, weather map makers --> enormous improvements for machine learning, forecasting, everything. 🎉

While there is increasingly strong evidence that global warming is accelerating, we need to be careful about how we detect it. Unfortunately a newly published paper on the topic makes a number of mistakes in it approach, as I discuss over at The Climate Brink: theclimatebrink.com/p/how-no…

When we properly run the numbers we end up just shy of statistically significant acceleration in the surface temperature records (at least without correcting for El Niño, solar, and volcanic variability), though with 2026 shaping up to be a top-2 hottest year this will shortly change:

Will this year's record-shattering El Niño event be the strongest in a millennium? In a new piece over at The Climate Brink I review the paleoclimate literature from tree rings and corals and argue that may well turn out to be the case. (link below)

My point is, don't make clean energy collateral damage to your insistence on blocking fossil projects. It's ok to be conflicted about *this* permitting reform bill. It's not ok to insist that the status quo is working.

The October runs for dynamical El Niño models are now all out, and its a mixed bag. Some revise the event downward, some upward, but on average its still expected to peak at ~4C, albeit with the peak more likely to occur in December than November:

A good example of how interconnection queues are holding up clean energy. We should encourage congress to pass a bill to address this!
