ALT Hamilton Centre ONDP Riding Association 1. Emergency Resolution to reverse the expulsion of MPP Sarah Jama from ONDP Caucus Whereas MPP Sarah Jama has expressed views on human rights in Palestine that reflect the positions of many within our party and match the statements of many organizations like Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and B’tselem; and Whereas defence of Palestinian rights and criticism of the state of Israel are not anti-semitic; and Whereas support for the people of Palestine does not represent support for Hamas; and Whereas Marit Stiles’ failure to support MPP Sarah Jama’s statement in defence of human rights in Palestine served to enable Doug Ford’s Conservative government’s anti-democratic censoring of MPP Sarah Jama from the Ontario Legislature, resulting in the disenfranchisement of Hamilton Centre constituents; and
ALT Whereas the ejection of the popular NDP MPP from the ONDP caucus is a victory for Doug Ford; and Whereas the removal of MPP Sarah Jama from the ONDP caucus has caused deep divisions, anger, and despair within our party as well as broader concerns about misogynoir and anti-black racism within the party; and Whereas the Provincial NDP was well aware of MPP Sarah Jama’s strong opinions regarding the Israeli government’s oppression of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the illegal occupied territories, in advance of her nomination as the NDP candidate in the March 2023 by-election; Therefore be it resolved that The Ontario NDP Provincial Council calls on the leader of the ONDP to offer MPP Sarah Jama immediate reinstatement as a member of the ONDP Legislative Caucus.
ALT 2.Emergency Resolution to call for an ONDP leadership review Whereas the removal of MPP Sarah Jama from NDP caucus has caused deep divisions, anger, and despair within our party as well as broader concerns about misogynoir and anti-black racism; and Whereas the ONDP’s efforts to build support amongst Ontario’s labour, grass roots and other activist groups have been jeopardized by Marit Stiles’ unilateral ousting of MPP Sarah Jama from the ONDP legislative caucus, and Whereas the Ontario NDP under Marit Stiles’ leadership has consistently obstructed and silenced caucus members and other party members who call out the apartheid state of Israel and its occupation of Palestine, and Whereas Marit Stiles has effectively silenced members who amplify the international human rights community’s condemnation of Israel’s illegal detention of Palestinians and its occupation, apartheid and colonial regime in Palestine, and
ALT 3.Emergency Resolution to Demand Restoration of full representation to Hamilton Centre Whereas MPP Sarah Jama was censured from speaking in the Ontario Legislature for expressing views on human rights in Palestine that reflect the positions of many within our party and which match the statements of many organisations like Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the United Nations and B’tselem; and Whereas Doug Ford’s Conservative government’s anti-democratic censuring of MPP Sarah Jama from the Ontario Legislature has silenced her voice and resulted in the disenfranchisement of Hamilton Centre constituents; and Whereas no member of the Ontario Legislature outside of the governing Conservative Party voted in favour of this censure. Be it resolved that:That Provincial Council urge the ONDP Legislative Caucus to demand that the Ford government immediately lift the undemocratic censure of MPP Sarah Jama in order to restore full representation to the constituents of Hamilton
ALT The Hamilton Centre Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP) Riding Association strongly condemns the decision by ONDP Leader Marit Stiles and senior staff on October 23 to expel Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama from caucus. This constitutes an attack on democracy, social justice, and all those activists who fight for truth and human rights. This shameful assault from the leader of our own party is nothing less than a capitulation to the grossly anti-democratic censure by the corrupt Doug Ford Conservative government. It was the height of hypocrisy for the NDP caucus of MPPs to vote against the PC censure motion in the Ontario Legislature, just minutes after Stiles informed Jama that she had been removed from the NDP caucus. We condemn Marit Stiles' and senior staff's decision to remove the strongest voice of justice, truth, and human rights from her caucus, and we condemn their extraordinary efforts to silence voices speaking out for the people of Palestine.
ALT In removing MPP Jama from caucus, the ONDP leadership has demonstrated complete disrespect and contempt for the constituents of Hamilton Centre Riding. By disrupting MPP Sarah Jama's constituency office operations she has effectively denied the people of Hamilton Centre ready access to critical support services; primarily residents on ODSP. This betrayal by leader Marit Stiles and the senior staff at the ONDP has destroyed the hopes of many activists, organizers, and community members whose efforts secured every single poll for MPP Sarah Jama in the recent by-election. MPP Jama offered a sense of hope to people who would not normally engage in partisan politics. As a riding association, we feel betrayed, angry, and extremely demoralized.
ALT From years of dedicated community organizing in this city, MPP Jama has received intense support in this moment. Thousands of party activists, labour leaders, racialized groups, feminists, environmentalists, and international solidarity groups have expressed outrage and are demanding that the removal of MPP Jama from the ONDP caucus be rescinded immediately. Several riding associations across the province are offering support to Hamilton Centre Riding Association's efforts to have its MPP reinstated to the NDP caucus. We want to reaffirm our support for MPP Sarah Jama. We demand that the ONDP rescind their removal of MPP Sarah Jama from the ONDP caucus immediately and we demand a review of the leadership of Marit Stiles by any and all appropriate means. - The Hamilton Centre ONDP Riding Association Executive
