Early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Malawi, we piloted a new method to detect excess mortality in small areas with limited death registration. It is based on periodic short surveys of perceptions of frequency of funerals. The (promising) results are here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3947…

A secondary analysis of our Health and Demographic Surveillance Site data using sequence analysis demonstrates the different pathways young people take to adulthood, finding increasing access to school for some of the rural population, while many still married at a young age.

Good progress: 51% decline in U5MR from 2000-2022; Annual # of under-five deaths dropped to 4.9 million in 2022.

Our new study in @ScienceAdvances finds: 1.18 million deaths.
Nearly as many deaths occurred in Year 2 as Year 1 with large increases in counties in the rural South.
