I don't think public employees, as such, should be different. But one difference with academics, public or private, is that we're the part of society that is supposed to deeply invest in non portable skills. That doesn't make sense without job protections.
I decided at 7:30p that I wanted to take 4 giant loads of laundry to the laundromat. I them promptly locked myself out of the house while loading said loads in the car. My dad came to rescue me.
