I feel itโs so much more than a scheme. Every staff member needs to understand how to form letters correctly and be on pupils when itโs not neat enough or formed correctly. This needs to be picked up on all lessons - not just in handwriting lessons.

During the academic year we have created a FOMO week leading up to the end of each half term to boost attendance.
12 days of Christmas โ
The great Easter hunt โ
For the end of the summer term we will be launching the summer sprint.
We have seen an uplift of 6-8% in attendance throughout the themed weeks compared with previous academic years.

Anyone who has ever led transition or attendance will understand what a gloriously wonderful piece of news this is ๐๐๐

๐งต1/ Supporting transition to secondary school just got a boost.
Secondary school leaders can now download absence data for Year 6 pupils offered a Year 7 place in their school this September. A game-changer for supporting attendance early. ๐

4/ Even better:
All mainstream schools now have access to an AI-powered Similar Schools report. It compares your schoolโs attendance with 20 statistically similar schools.

There have been times when the pushbacks have been difficult but consistency is key to school improvement.
Every time a student challenged our new routines we went back to our โwhyโ and held firm.
Every time a parent challenged our new routines we went back to our โwhyโ and held firm.
This doesnโt have to be done in a confrontational way. Itโs important to listen to why there is pushback and apply reasonable adjustments where necessary.
Often the reason for pushback is because people donโt know the why.

***TEACHING AND LEARNING***
Thread ๐งต
To improve the use of teaching and learning techniques in the classroom we need to define them โthis is how we do it hereโ and make it common practice across the school.
When implementing T&L techniques their success relies on this clarity and creating opportunities for teachers to deliberately practice.
What have we done @LHS_HighSchool?
STEP 1
We have identified 10 core T&L techniques.

Belle Vue is incredibly special๐Iโm thrilled you recognised how important celebration and the Friday assemblies are! Work hard, play hard ๐๐๐. Also very relieved that @SFL2326 didnโt show you our first-ever videoโฆ letโs just say my fitness levels werenโt exactly shining๐
Shifting the narrative: Iโve put my rusty A* in maths to good use & built an embarrassingly basic calculator for academies to measure the extra learning hrs happening each week, half-term, etc. Gains can be shared with parents & students - normalising good/improved attendance๐น

Thanks to Claire Fowler at @voice21oracy for a great session last night at our @Cabotfederation Teaching & Learning / Professional Development Network. The Oracy Benchmarks - shorturl.at/8hjAV are such a great resource for schools or trusts looking to improve oracy.

๐Pupil absence is a key, and growing, driver of the disadvantage gap. If disadvantaged pupils had the same level of absence as their peers, the gap at age 11 would be almost 1 month smaller, and at age 16, over 4 months smaller.
How can it be anything other than a Happy Monday when you are greeted with this kind gentleman. Happy St Patrick's Day ๐ฎ๐ช๐
Might the high profile rhetoric around school absences and term time holidays, be normalising poor attendance? Maybe it's time to shift the focus onto how many children are attending school. Good news stories if you will. ๐ค
@ChilternLT sessions had so many practical tips for Academies ๐๐ป and were brilliantly delivered.
