India needs to grab leadership opportunities in R&D, with public and private investment with foresight. Too many opportunities have been frittered away in the past. Disruption in thought/governance/policy are a must to emerge as leaders in the changing world order. Opinion piece

Almost everything I've written in twenty one years of GMI traces back to two things... debt and demographics. An ageing population means slower growth, and slower growth means more debt to paper over the gap. Thats The Everything Code. But something else is now sitting on top of it. AI, robotics, energy and crypto are all hitting their exponential curves at the same time. The Exponential Age is where the debt problem and the technology collide, and what comes out the other side is a very different world. This is seven minutes on how it all fits together. The long version is in my book, out 3rd November. And until tonight, when you preorder The Everything Code I’ll send you the September GMI report free. The issue is called The New Macro, and its about what that collision looks like right now. It looks at which risks the bears are pricing wrongly, which ones could actually derail it, and the five numbers that would tell me I'm wrong. GMI is normally members only, so this is the only way most people will ever read one. How to claim it below.

Two hallmarks of Indian regulations in one place: 1. Can’t catch the people creating problems - let’s create pain for everyone. Why try to catch 1% when you can create the pain for 100% 2. More paperwork solves everything for the bureaucrats- it not really a solution but at least it’s not their problem anymore. Look at the problem that @rameshsrivats is talking about. RBI will say we published everything months ago, HDFC will say employee needs more training and that the software services company made an error, company will say this clarification is in their pipeline of fixes and that the clarification came too late, etc etc. A full round robin of finger pointing and no one who is responsible. I am sure this behavior takes off a few bips off India’s GDP growth rate but that is problem for another ministry/department!
The EDF (Export Declaration Form) rules are now in effect, and it seems like RBI and banks have conspired to create a new hell. Or actually 5 hells. I consult for an American company. Raised October invoice. Received the Inward remittance. And bang! Mail from @HDFC_Bank detailing everything needed before the payment can be processed. Let me tell you what the 5 hells are: 1. The hell of confusion – RBI clarified last month that the EDF rules do not apply to individuals. But looks like they haven’t told the banks. And CAs also don’t seem to know. There’s no official communication on who is exempt. Last I checked, I was an individual. No company, no LLP. But HDFC still wants me to file the EDF to credit my payment. 2. The hell of complexity – See the attached pic of the form the bank has sent in excel. It has 5 sheets. To be filled and submitted. Some abstruse acronyms like “AD” - no clue what it means. Some fields are mandatory. Some fields are to be filled by the bank. No idea which is what. And it needs a physical signature. Which leads to... 3. The hell of paperwork - They also sent a pdf with a bunch of request letters. I’m supposed to choose the right letter, print, sign, scan and submit. Creating more paper today is incredibly silly. And, I suppose, someone in the bank will have to upload all this somewhere. Reminds me of those hand-filled immigration forms. Pointless. 4. The hell of repetition – At least for me, most of the details are constant. One client, one payment. If it’s a one-time exercise, fine. I’ll grit my teeth and get it done. But no. These details have to be given month after month. Else… no payment will be credited. 5. The hell of unpreparedness – It would have been simple enough for RBI or HDFC to create an online portal for this. With dropdowns, saved formats, contextual help, etc. to at least make this easy. But that would be too convenient, no? So, they’ve chosen to dump the entire burden on the taxpayer. I have no opinion or understanding of why this is needed. Maybe it is critical information. Okay! But why make the process so confusing and painful? And poor communication has meant that the banks have just passed on the pain to the exporter, and even CAs can’t help. Basically RBI & HDFC feel I should consult less, and comply more. Maybe my client will also agree :)

MATTER OF GREAT PRIDE FOR INDIAN SCIENCE!   Ashoke Sen becomes the first Indian to win the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal (2026), jointly  awarded by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his pioneering work in String theory.   deccanherald.com/science/ben…   String theory gives a unified description of all matter and the forces between them based on the postulate that the elementary constituents of matter are tiny one dimensional (string-like) objects instead of point particles. Sen’s breakthrough work has shown that multiple string theories are all different versions of a single underlying theory.   Incidentally, I met Ashok Sen for the first time, when both of us were elected  as FRS (Fellows of Royal Society) in 1998. Ashoke ( nominated by Stephen Hawking himself) was young 42 yrs and I was an oldie - 55 yrs though!   What struck me was Ashoke’s  incredible simplicity. His wife Sumathi Rao has reportedly said that Ashoke bought his first suit and needed some assistance to wear his first tie for that prestigious 1998 FRS ceremony in London, when one signs in the same book that Sir Isaac Newton has signed.   A film made on the life and work of Ashoke Sen, when we at the H K Firodia Award in Science & Technology honoured him in 2005 in Pune, will inspire all our budding scientists - showing how science & simplicity goes together. youtu.be/CoVc5cM5XlU?si=vQNQ… We all feel so so proud Ashoke! @PMOIndia @NITIAayog @PrinSciAdvOff @IndiaDST @CSIR_IND @ictstifr @PuneIntCentre @kvijayraghavan

This is such a telling statement..
Honored to join @SecRubio at @RIL_Updates Jamnagar facilities. Over the past year, India’s imports of U.S. LPG have surged from under 10% to 67%, making the United States India’s largest LPG supplier. Reliance’s planned investment in the first new U.S. oil refinery in 50 years is another major opportunity to expand American energy production and create jobs.

"The Himalayas formed when two continents 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱. Roughly 140 million years ago, the landmass that is now India 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 from a southern 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 called Gondwana and began 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 north across an ancient ocean, the Tethys Sea. It moved remarkably fast for a 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲, several times faster than most. About 50 million years ago, India reached Eurasia. Both plates carry thick, light 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, which is too 𝗯𝘂𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗻𝘁 to sink into the Earth's mantle. Instead of one plate sliding under the other, the crust 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗱, 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱, and 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, forming the highest mountain range on Earth, including Everest. The 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 never stopped. India still pushes north at about 4–5 cm a year, so the Himalayas keep 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 by a few millimeters annually. This steady pressure also makes the region one of the most 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 in the world."
