Get yourself a stupid little inkjet printer from AliExpress. Go into debt if you have to. It's like having a magical robot Sharpie pen that auto increments and timestamps. Too much fun. Great for labeling kids stuff without fiddly thermal backing tape etc.
Good stuff

We finally have an explanation for “Facebook is listening to me through my phone”. They’d never do that (and it’s not really possible).
Turns out literally everyone else was — and then selling that to ad data brokers.
WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners.
Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads.
Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was.
Got a root shell.
then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems.
This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

If SARS-CoV-2 was really damaging people’s frontal lobes, you’d be noticing people being more brazenly rude, hostile, bigoted, antisocial, and tribalistic. Both online & irl.
You’d notice people would be quicker to lose their temper, and unable to keep a lid on their emotions.

I suspect much of modern burnout is downstream to the fact that deadlines don’t really exist - and therefore don’t really matter
This wasn’t the case - even 15 years ago
Eg. Marketing needing two weeks lead time because of printing, now stuff goes live whenever
The product gets constant small updates rather than something major once a year
You used to be able to relax after finishing something, which makes pushing to get it done much easier
Now it’s just always on, all the time

And this is of course all worsened by how secrecy corrodes reasoning, as Ellsberg once taught Kissinger:
“you’re about to get a lot of clearances higher than top secret that you did not know existed. That’s going to have (...) effects on you. First, a great exhilaration that you’re getting all this amazing information that you didn’t know even existed.
And (...) you’ll feel like a fool for not having known of any of this. But that won’t last long. Very soon, you’ll come to think that everyone else is foolish. What would this expert be telling me if he knew what I knew?” So in the end, you stopped listening to them.”
Dwarkesh Patel reveals an Anthropic employee told him two days ago they expect AIs to match humans at AI research within nine months based on inside information they can’t share, and says labs should make that evidence public
“I think there’s a very frustrating element to the current situation right now, where people inside the AI labs claim to have evidence that makes them more worried. And they are not allowed to talk about it. And this makes it a very difficult situation on the outside to evaluate how worried we should be."
"So for example, just the other day, maybe two days ago, I was talking to somebody at Anthropic and they were like, look, I expect AIs to be humans at AI research within nine months."
"And I’m like, why do you believe that? Well, they’re like, it’s not just vibes, but I have information on the inside. Like, what is it? Is it a new model? Is it some evaluation you ran? It’s like, I can’t talk about it."
"I think it’s a terrible state of affairs. If they really believe this, if they think that we’re in a situation where we’re less than a year away from automating AI research and radically speeding it up, they should make this evidence public.”
Just imagine how many pedestrians you can kill with flying gravel. Truly next-level.

It’s too late. We needed to be spinning out open hardware & verified software to replace the vendor stacks last year with some kind of national service program to understand and migrate systems (e.g. INL & NREL doing nothing but this).
We still have folks running critical infra who think their ICS networks are airgapped when they are running unencrypted serial over RF, never mind actually being connected to the internet through paths they didn’t anticipate.
Water & Wastewater systems are probably the most vulnerable.
Fun project for tracking whether someone has taken the dog out lately or fed her at the usual times. Uses Home Assistant and ESPHome and a Matouch 2.1 rotary touch display. Turns on when the kitchen motion sensor is active and sleeps otherwise. Tap a button to reset the timer.
Device link makerfabs.com/matouch-esp32-… - not an endorsement per se but it works for me. Lots of other options out there that do similar things.
