My son is now in high school. He LOVES to read because he went to the comics store with me every week. It was a special outing each Wednesday that was all about the love of literature. We always read together. Now - we still do the exact same thing. Comics = literacy.
This would be fun to have students summarize a book they are reading in class, or a historical event, or…
This was such a great conversation!

A quick peek at just some of the comics I use to teach about the humanity in historical events, to inspire research, and to write analytically and introspectively.
Hi all - can you help us out with a survey? Trying to put together some higher level education resources on comics and graphic novels in education. We’d super appreciate it! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…
Proud to be presenting with the education team at The National WWII Museum on teaching with comics and cartoons - register for free here for the online seminar - zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_… @WWIImuseum
The only thing I need to change is he is now in college!
My wife is an English teacher. I am a history teacher. We had a cross-department meeting today. I think I made my point. LOL.
Remember - high school kids love and deserve stickers too! Even if a kid doesn’t get a perfect score, there are still great answers in there and should be rewarded. My kids love to peel them off and collect them.
Honored to share that I’ll be presenting with the National WW2 Museum in a free online webinar on Sept 21st from 5-6 CST. Register here - nationalww2museum.org/events…
Yes, I’m nervous about a new school year. Yes, teaching is stressful. But I have hundreds of cards and letters just like this one to read through to remind me of why I am a teacher. Create that good news binder to keep yourself going on those tough days.
Powerful. I saw myself, my kids, and my students in these stories. There is no “normal” and we need to see the individual students in front of us in our classrooms.
I appreciate the efforts to bring new teachers into the profession. But we also need to talk about how to keep our veteran teachers. My district trusting me to be my authentic self in the classroom is so powerful. Passion is contagious. pbs.org/newshour/education/c…
In my book and class as we use comics & hip hop as history/reflection of society. Analytical reading and writing comes in many forms. Make your classroom, and students, loud and empowered. (Also a great way to teach annotations and actively engaging with text!)
