My life changed when Dan became my editor in 2015. He was… the best. He had so many brilliant ideas, so much energy, so many Dad jokes. He was always there for me. And I will miss him so much. washingtonpost.com/obituarie…

Good fact-based reporting is under pressure in our industry. Today, @nytimes publisher AG Sulzberger made his first ad, "encouraging you today to support any news organization." It's a reminder of how important this reporting is, regardless of who produces it. Have a listen here.

"This is the best picture I made in Korea of civilians—a family running down stairs, a father holding a baby, tanks firing away. Those tanks are taking fire from North Koreans right down the street!” David Douglas Duncan

The work that @Lescarpenter, @barrysvrluga and @RickMaese have done during the past few weeks from the Olympics has been nothing short of spectacular. Their dedication to the readers despite the destruction of The Post Sports Department is the stuff of legends.

Work is how I’m coping with getting laid off at the Washington Post. Editors: I’m open to any general assignments on the ground in South Korea, and I have extensive experience in business writing and book-related coverage. Link to my clips below.

My colleague Marty Weil is one of The Post’s last living ties to Watergate. He’s covered stories that range from local crime to the Sept. 11 attacks to whimsical weather musings. After 60 years, he was laid off yesterday by email. nytimes.com/2026/02/05/busin…

Finnish MP Juho Eerola is under fire after posting a “Je suis Sarah” profile photo mimicking the eye-pulling gesture that cost former Miss Finland Sarah Dzafce her title. Eerola denies the image is racist and says it was “for fun”, while critics say it normalises racial stereotyping of people of East Asian origin. helsinkitimes.fi/finland/fin…

11 What will be the impact on global non-proliferation and the lessons other nations draw? Regimes without nukes—Ukraine, Iraq, Libya, Iran—proved vulnerable to external intervention, while those with nukes—like North Korea—enjoy impunity.

Love finding these old takes from when we were so smug and clever.

How many “Russia is going to invade tomorrow” takes have there been over the past week that have all been proven wrong?

The Nazis weren’t history’s only monsters. Japan’s Unit 731 froze prisoners alive, dissected children without anesthesia, and unleashed plague bombs. At the center was Shirō Ishii, a man more monstrous than history dares to remember. Here’s the horror they tried to erase:

In 1999, I was assigned to design the expansion pack to Age of Empires 2. I chose The Conquerors as the theme, and wishing to have 4 civs (as we had on Rise of Rome), I chose the Spanish, the Aztecs, the Huns, and the Mayans. The project went ahead extremely well. We were almost completely finished, 5 weeks ahead of schedule as of January 2000. I was excited to move onto Age of Empires 3. Then Microsoft called and we had an important conference call. 1/

My Chinese American colleagues in Texas public universities such as the whole U Texas including MD Anderson are now required to report family visit trip to China ahead of trip, and provide a post-travel briefing detailing the trip. Land of the free (your experience may differ).
