last i'll say of this but where exactly is the ascetic artist transcending ordinary human desire that the current ao3 discourse is invoking as the standard... when has our cultural imagination ever hailed the un-tortured artist...
there's always reliably a moment here when i'm doing #discourse where the other commenter stops making any sense & then i'm left wondering why i bothered at all
re distributing ppl's fics... i wouldn't mind but i see why authors feel disconcerted... a few yrs ago i got a sharp spike in kudos on a nrt fic reflecting it had been shared & perhaps even discussed positively somewhere. & from this i got 0 comments. a bit frustrating is all...
the issue w readers distributing ao3 fics is very obviously ao3 has more users than ever now & authors haven't seen a concurrent rise in meaningful engagement -- in many cases the opposite. then readers are like you shouldn't care abt validation, ao3 is an archive!
sorry but fandom is a /community/ of a sort, pitch in a little... you see how this demands saintly levels of detachment from authors & nothing of readers
my now months-long mourning journey over the boys rly owes to the sheer volume of nonsense i tolerated for homelander who despite all forces conspiring against him managed to remain generative for thinking through certain issues i am interested in exploring via fiction... rip💔
i think it's a common fandom & critic habit to identify when a text is attempting to invoke a real-world parallel through x & then reduce the entire portrayal of x to that parallel -- when in the text there are deliberate convergences & divergences
it's not that i dislike what the boys was doing in invoking cops or white supremacy through its supes, that's in conversation w the foundations of the superhero genre... but your intent obviously wasn't confined to just this social commentary when you also compared people running
you know what was irritating. how the boys was like supes are cops, military, white supremacists, & whatever other thing they tacked on for the memeable political dialogue of the week but then also kept writing in a new supe torture program every new season. what was up with that
i'm not sure why fandoms tend to characterize "redemption arcs" in fiction as conservative. person recognizes their actions have caused harm & makes meaningful attempts towards ameliorating said harm... is this the fantasy driving the modern right. do we live in the same universe
sorry having experienced multiple iterations of "homelander won't be redeemed his conservative fanboys are so dumb😂" discourse... u guys can just say u don't want to see it. that's allowed. you don't have to fabricate a politically progressive rationale for it
