Wildlife just has no chance with us. None.
Simply horrific and unbelievable that this active barn owl nest in NYCโa historical first in Manhattanโhas been destroyed by construction workers.
Callous and indefensible wildlife crime like this may invite a fine, which will be no comfort to this barn owl family, but may be a reminder that the law and wildlife protection matter.

Speaking to participants of a meeting focused on the future of AI, Pope Leo XIV stressed that decisions relating to human life can never be given to machines.
"Decisions affecting human life, freedom and the use of force must always remain subject to effective, informed and responsible human oversight. For this reason, artificial intelligence must be 'disarmed', and I encourage the States meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons."
So many Austen people not even realizing how many great adaptations there are. This was excellent and always deserved more attention.
We mourn the passing of Patrick Stewart, who inspired countless individuals at NASA (and beyond) to boldly go where no one has gone before.
This is the best #Halloween account this year.
Be the most #frockingfabulous ghoul at the #Halloween party with this 17th century mourning ring, embellished by skeletons. Even better, the lid comes off the coffin to reveal a wee skeleton chilling inside! Via the British Museum.

Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.
Looking forward to the pushback from proponents who are convinced they're smarter than a 2000 year old institution.
The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

โThis simple bone plaque is unusual. It was made by a Viking in the image of a Viking, offering a rare chance to see how they viewed themselves on an object that was probably meant to be wornโ 866-1066, Yorkshire Museum, โViking Northโ exhibition
Patrick Stewart, who died today at 86, became Professor X and Captain Picard. As a boy, he watched his father beat his mother, and heard the doctors who came to help tell her it was her own fault.
In the video below, a woman thanks him for helping her survive her own abuse, and his answer brings the whole room to its feet.
He grew up in a poor mill town in England. His father came home from World War II a different man and turned his violence on Patrick's mother.
Every time the doctors and ambulance men came, they told her she must have provoked him, that it takes two to make an argument.
Decades later, Stewart learned from his father's war records that he had been suffering from severe shell shock that was never treated.
So he spent the rest of his life working for two charities: one for abused women, in his mother's name, and one for traumatized soldiers, in his father's.
He could have spent his life hating his father. Instead, he spent it helping others. Is that the kind of legacy that matters more than fame?

Great to see one of the greatest living illustrators is willing to stand up to AI companies.
But very disappointing to see a lawyer at @LewisSilkin spreading misinfo on the BBC about how AI works. "Generative AI doesn't copy, it trains" is simply not true - training categorically involves copying.
This kind of misinfo misleads the public and harms creatives' ability to defend their rights.

A random search suggests that the guy who compared the Jonestown cult to MAGA was trolling Fox News. This is our media today. Fox made an assumption & it was a live, real interview with someone with a real opinion. Frankly as someone who knows a MAGA person, the guy is right.

Obviously, being assassinated was not how Gustav III saw his day panning out, but the fashionista king was at least #frockingfabulous when he made his fateful outing! This is the masquerade outfit Gustav was sporting when he was shot in the back. #gloriousgeorgians

NEW: Pope Leo XIV is set to become the first sitting pontiff in the Catholic Churchโs two-thousand-year history to vote in a secular election.
Leo requested an Illinois mail ballot on Oct. 3, and it was sent to his brother Johnโs home in New Lenox, Ill.
John Prevost visited the pope at the Vatican on Wednesday and may now be carrying the ballot back to the Will County clerk by hand. thelettersfromleo.com/p/popeโฆ

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we werenโt in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. โBut Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to riskโgetting lost in Hollywood for years and years?โ. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in Londonโs West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

Am SO desolate to hear of wonderful Patrick Stewart's death! We became friends over the last decade or so though I never saw enough of him - but his glorious daily online readings of the Shakespeare Sonnets were the best antidote to the miserable isolation of Covid imaginable - and knowing there was another brilliant impassioned role around the corner was a kind of heartening kinship. His Macbeth and Antony were stupendous and his Hirst taking it to Ian McKellen's Spooner in Pinter 's No Man's Land unforgettable. Patrick could do menace to make you shiver. But the thing about the greatest actors is, their voice lives in your head for good - and in Patrick's case that laugh too!
