Racism survives not only because people practice it, but because too many people watch it happen and say nothing.
Jane Elliott has spent decades challenging racism and prejudice, reminding people that discrimination doesn't have to be accepted as normal. In this clip, she recalls a former student who refused to sit quietly when a teacher used a racist slur, choosing to walk out until the behavior stopped.
That is what speaking up looks like. Not waiting for someone else to intervene. Not pretending harmful words are harmless. Not allowing racism, sexism, or bigotry to pass without challenge.
Elliott's message is clear: if prejudice is learned, it can be unlearned. But change begins when people decide they will no longer tolerate mistreatment.
As she puts it: βWe have got to stop tolerating the intolerable.

When I visited Nebraska, I got the full rundown of one of the coolest GameDay traditions in college football.
The team locks arms and says its motto together. The music starts blaring. The energy builds.
Then they hit the tunnel, get greeted by the fans, wait at the gate for a few seconds, and finally run out onto the field in front of a packed Memorial Stadium. β¬οΈ
