People want the romantic cup-upset SO MUCH —and I’m genuinely happy for Fleetwood Town, and fewer games for already flogged Arsenal players— that they refuse to see the tackle from behind (outlawed for 25-30 years!) as anything other than League 2, proper football 🙄

That challenge on Dowman was so, so dangerous. It’s the follow through from Neal that’s super dangerous. The reaction should be the least of anybody’s concerns but in this country, for some reason, we glamourise that kind of crap. ‘A proper cup tie challenge’, ‘blood & thunder of the football league’ and all the rest of it…

The Messi Cup kicks off tomorrow. The second edition of the U16 tournament is being played in Miami. All 16 clubs play their three group games on consecutive days (Sunday, Monday & Tuesday). The final is on Sunday 1st November. River Plate U16 won the 2025 edition.

OTD 1997: Diego Maradona played his last ever professional game. Not any game, a superclásico at El Monumental! Maradona came off at HT, replaced by a 19-year old Juan Román Riquelme. Boca beat River 2-1. Diego announced his retirement five days later on his 37th birthday.
