It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of OpenCitations Founder and Co-Director Prof. David M. Shotton on Saturday, 18th May.
We want to celebrate his intellectual and human legacy through the words of some collaborators in OC: opencitations.hypotheses.org…
Guess what? The 4th edition of the Workshop on Open Citations and Open Scholarly Metadata is coming back to #Bologna! On 26-27 October 2023 we will welcome you at @Unibo for a two-day event: workshop-oc.github.io/ - speakers and call for applications to be announced soon

Thanks to @DataCite, @WellcomeTrust, and the @ChanZuckerberg for building this corpus and thanks for putting it in the #PublicDomain.
PS: How will this #interoperate with similar projects like @I4OC_org and @OpenCitations?

The move towards open metadata has progressed hugely with the efforts of @i4oc_org, @open_abstracts @Metadata2020, @pkp, our own board/staff, and MANY others. The paper is right that references are only the first step. 1/2
A double whammy from me in this week’s @Nature:
A news story on all citation data in @CrossrefOrg becoming open due to @i4oc_org: nature.com/articles/d41586-0…
And an editorial comment arguing that publishers must go further: nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Excellent editorial: "Depositing all relevant metadata on @CrossrefOrg should become the norm in scholarly publishing ... For those publishers that don’t have the time or resources to do this, @i4oc_org, @open_abstracts ... have declared themselves ready to offer assistance."
Editorial: Citation data are now open, but that’s far from enough nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Just 5 years! Did anyone in I4OC expect this back then?
5 years since the launch of the I4OC we hit our goal 🥳 i4oc.org/#progress

Outstanding advance in the open sector. @Wikicite please copy. The citation graph on @Wikidata should be seen as a fundamental enrichment of the bare data.

Huge congrats to the I4OC team on reaching this impressive milestone; of course this also provides a reminder for publishers to open their abstracts and other metadata; it will help tremendously to improve the discoverability of scientific content!

A big thank you to @CrossrefOrg for their leadership, to the I4OC steering group, and to all the publishers and #openscience organizations who joined us in our mission to liberate citation data. It takes a village!
We're thrilled to announce that @IEEEorg has decided to make citation data for all their papers openly available. A big win for the Initiative for Open Citation 5 years since its inception, and a wealth of new data openly available to everyone without any usage restrictions. 🥳
Thanks to everyone in the community who helped us advocate with their publisher and journal editors for this change and to @CrossrefOrg for their amazing partnership.
