Junior College Baseball and the World Series. Jacob Misiorowski-Brewers-Crowder College Aaron Ashby-Brewers-Crowder College Logan Henderson-Brewers-McLennan Community College Robert Gasser-Brewers-San Joaquin Delta College JoJo Romero-Brewers-Yavapai College Cam Booser-Rays-Central Arizona College The Brewers have the best scouting staff in baseball and it is really not arguable. A lot of teams are lost when it comes to evaluating and drafting Juco players because of inexperienced scouts that need data and tech to evaluate for them. I have heard a lot of talk about providing junior colleges with technology. I have a profound idea that could be impactful. Hire experienced scouts that have enough moxie and feel to not require it when evaluating players. They can use their eyes and ears. Real scouts know how to evaluate junior college players.

Forrest Gump made $661 million and still lost money on paper. The man who wrote it was owed 3% of the profits and paid exactly zero - and the studio never broke a single rule The word was net. Winston Groom had sold the rights to his novel for $350,000, plus 3% of the net profits - a share of whatever was left after the studio covered its costs. Tom Hanks, in the same film, took the opposite: a slice of the gross, a cut of the money the moment it came in, before anyone subtracted a cent. Same movie, same success. One of them got paid Here’s where it becomes pure money. “Net profit” was never a number anyone would find - it was a number the studio got to build. Paramount took a 32% distribution fee off the top, paid straight to itself. Then came advertising, overhead, interest on its own financing, and the gross checks already cut to Hanks and the director. Every one was subtracted before the math reached Groom’s 3%. So it never did. A film that sold $661 million in tickets had, on paper, lost money - not by accident, by design That’s the whole lesson, and it has nothing to do with movies. A share of the profits is only ever a share of a number the other side gets to define - and whoever decides what counts as an expense will always find one more before they reach you. Hanks took his cut off the top, where nothing could be subtracted. Groom took his off the bottom, where everything could. Same percentage sign, opposite outcomes Groom only saw real money after he threatened to sue - and the deal he signed for the sequel rights changed one thing that mattered more than the figure: his share would be counted before expenses, not after. He’d finally learned the only rule that protects you. So the next time someone offers you a percentage of the profits - a bonus, equity, a revenue share, a cut of the deal - don’t ask how big the slice is. Ask who gets to decide what’s left to slice. Did Groom just negotiate badly, or was he the last to learn that “net” is a number written by the people who owe you?

Billy Crystal reveals that at 8:45 on a Monday morning, about to send the obituary he had written for his manager of 45 years, an unknown number rang and it was his longtime makeup artist Bill Farley calling to say goodbye from hospice "So I wrote as best I could, funny, intimate, good stories, something where I felt really good about it. It's 8:45 Monday morning. I'm doing this. Do I press send? Do I press send?" "I'm just about to do, the phone rings. I don't recognize the area code. About to press, rings again. I go, 'Somebody's trying to reach me.' I say, 'Hello?' And the person tells me who it is. One of my really close friends, great guy named Bill Farley." "Bill was on my makeup and hair team for every movie that I did, and a hilarious, wonderful guy. I mean, a really close friend. 'I'm going into hospice. I have maybe a week. I just wanted to say goodbye. What a great life we've had together. I've enjoyed working with you so much. Is Janice there?' She hears his voice. 'Hey, Janice.' 'Bill.' 'Just want to say goodbye.'" "And then the last thing he said was, 'When I see you again, I'll give you a trim.' And he hung up, and I press send."
Judd Apatow admits that in the years before anyone knew Adam Sandler, he watched rooms slowly gravitate toward him while Apatow stood on the side as a weird neurotic person, and quietly gave up on being a performer "I think I didn't think I was the unique performer that they were, because I was a comedy fan. I knew what they were doing. So just as a nerd, I would watch them and go, 'Oh, this is way better than what I'm doing.'" "And I didn't even have a sense of, like, I could evolve to the point where I could be on their level as a performer or a star, because I could feel the charisma." "You know, in those years when you would walk in a room and no one knew who Adam was, the room still would slowly gravitate towards him. Like, you could feel just his charisma in life and how funny he was and charming." "And I was just like a weird, neurotic, uncomfortable person on the side of the room. And so it didn't take long for me to go, 'Yeah, I don't think I'm going to do that. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.'" "And they were always very encouraging of me. So I was writing for them and we were all creatively doing things together, and they believed in me, which meant a lot. I just wasn't sure what I would do." "And then at some point I met Ben Stiller and, you know, we created The Ben Stiller Show after years of writing jokes for people like Roseanne and Tom and people like that."
