Our recent paper is now published in Tetrahedron Letters! We take a deeper dive into the scope and functional group tolerance of the aza-Ramberg–Bäcklund route to 1,2-disubstituted diazenes, while also exploring some of its current limitations. We hope you find it useful!
Excited to share our latest paper, now out in Tetrahedron Letters as part of the special issue honoring Prof. Pep Cornella. @CornellaLab

Now live in TETL! We have introduced N-phenothiazinium amine salts as stable, tunable precursors for generating N-centered radicals. Providing a new route to aminyl radicals for use in C–N bond-forming reactions. Congrats to @iamsamya96 and coworkers.

🔬 This study introduces a nickel-catalyzed base-free C-N cross-electrophile coupling (XEC) strategy that enables efficient C-N bond formation by coupling electrophilic carbon and nitrogen partners under mild conditions.
🔹 A philicity-mismatched Ni-catalyzed C-N cross-electrophile coupling was developed using electrophilic carbon and nitrogen precursors, eliminating the need for basic additives.
🔹 The method exhibits broad functional group tolerance, including excellent compatibility with base-sensitive substrates and late-stage functionalization.
🔹 Electrophilic nitrogen precursors can be readily prepared from diverse starting materials, including C-H bonds and olefins.
🔹 A two-step, one-pot N-phenothiazination/C-N XEC sequence enables the efficient functionalization of amine-containing bioactive molecules and the synthesis of designer secondary, tertiary, and unsymmetrical diamines.
🔹 Mechanistic studies support a Ni(II)-aryl-amido intermediate as the key species responsible for promoting cross-selectivity while suppressing homocoupling.
🐝 We are pleased to see that 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, a key ligand used in this study, was sourced from AmBeed.
