UPDATE: Specific mitigation guidance for the recently identified PHP critical vulnerabilities is now available. Secure your servers today. Guidance and technical steps here: nsa.gov/Press-Room/Press-Rel…
Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

Until we get confirmation Jira is safe from the PHP vulnerability, I don’t think anyone should be opening tickets or assigning me work.

Some stats on #php2shell. In the 10 hours before it was publicly announced, across the @Cloudflare network we saw thousands of attempts to exploit it. That jumped to tens of thousands in the 45 minutes post announcement, hundreds of thousands within 2 hours, and millions now.

We recommend Cisco users disable the Smart Install (SMI) auto-loading feature on all NSS and DIB network devices to mitigate exploitation by remote attackers. Have you taken this action? Read more: media.defense.gov/2019/Jul/1… #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth

Some news, I've joined Anthropic along with my brother @scottymccrae. Proud of our run at Meta, and excited to contribute to Claude's journey toward becoming an agent Fittingly, Claude Duet launches today! It's already taking work off my plate + the proactivity is quite nice
We’re opening a research preview of Claude Duet, a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf.

Fascinating. Amazon says it has telemetry showing PHP2Shell was being exploited on Oct. 17—that is, four days prior to public disclosure. Not known who was doing it. "It remains unclear how the actor acquired exploit information prior to disclosure." aws.amazon.com/blogs/securit…

think today’s php disclosure is a harbinger of things to come. these models will make us all safer by finding long lurking issues. however the entire software supply chain will need the muscles to rapidly build and deploy fixes. we might need a lot more public + private partnerships to secure infrastructure across the country.

We're opening Claude Duet today as a research preview, starting with a waitlist. It's our take on giving everyone a trusted partner with your work. I've been using it for a few weeks, at work and at home. It drafted questions for a fireside chat, watched Slack over the weekend so I could log off, and told me about the new @nealstephenson book — and then ordered it from my local bookstore once I asked. We've found Opus 5.5 was our first model with the judgment to be proactive in the right ways. Here's what that's looked like.

Two classes extremely bad cyber vulnerabilities disclosed in the last 24 hours. The first potentially impacts everyone online. The second impacts nearly everyone running a server. tl;dr: Everyone should upgrade their OS and Browser as soon as possible. If you run a server you should upgrade PHP (or ensure it’s removed if you’re not using it) as soon as possible. The first class of vulnerabilities is a set of root TLS certificates that were discovered to have a trivial private key. Literally the number 4. These roots were controlled by #eMudhra. The problem is that with that an attacker could create a certificate and, if they could get in the traffic flow, intercept traffic to any site or service. The solution is to stop trusting certificates issued by these vulnerable roots. Upgrading your browser and OS is the fastest way for most Internet users to do this. The second class of vulnerabilities doesn’t apply to most consumers directly, but does apply to most anyone running a server. These vulnerabilities have been dubbed #php2shell. PHP is one of the most widely used web programming languages. It’s estimated 70% of websites run on PHP. These vulnerabilities allow an attacker to send a crafted set of queries to a server running PHP and potentially take over the server. From there they could potentially read, modify, delete, or repurpose anything on the server. The solution is to upgrade PHP to the latest version ASAP. Even if you’re not using PHP for your web development, it’s often included by default. So make sure it is either upgraded or fully removed. @Cloudflare received advanced warning of both of these classes of vulnerabilities. We’ve ensured that where we act as a proxy we are no longer trusting the vulnerable roots. We are also reviewing certificate transparency (CT) logs for any sign the vulnerability was exploited before its disclosure. We have not found any evidence but CT logs are not perfect and a sophisticated attacker who knew about the weakness could have exploited it without a new certificate being logged. For the PHP vulnerabilities, we have deployed mitigations available for all customers for free. Because of the complexity of the vulnerabilities and number of ways it can be exploited, we also released new WAF capabilities that are unique in the industry to catch the exploit based on the response. These too are available for every Cloudflare customer for free. Even if you are taking advantage of Cloudflare’s protection, it is important to upgrade your OS, browsers, and PHP installations as soon as possible. We can provide a strong bandaid, but the best protection is to fix the underlying problem. If you’re interested in learning more, you can read our blogs: Vulnerable roots: blog.cloudflare.com/emudhra-… PHP vulnerabilities: blog.cloudflare.com/php-vuln…

BREAKING: @AnthropicAI just launched Duet, its always-on personal agent. It’s the first personal agent I’d call a pro tool. We’ve been testing it for two weeks. I’ve gone from mostly using ChatGPT to roughly 50/50 between ChatGPT and Claude—the most time I’ve spent with Anthropic in close to a year. • It lives in its own app, separate from Claude, on iOS, Android, and the web. This makes it feel clean and easy to understand. • It has channels for specific areas of your work and life rather than just a single chat • It has a todo list so you never lose what you’re working on and you can always see statuses • It allows you to easily write and edit documents, slides, and more all through the app. • It’s not a chief of staff yet. It can see the Claude sessions on my computers but can’t direct them. Its email drafts are worse than dot’s, and voice is transcription only—you can’t have a spoken conversation with it. My verdict: the vibes are good, and I’m opening Duet every day. It’s worth trying. Check out our agent comparison page: every.to/personal-agents-com… Full Vibe Check coming soon on @every

"Given the unsavory role the media and the internet as a whole have played in Reese's career in the W so far, it would be a disservice to look at this performance in a vacuum. It was a loud statement to just about everyone: it was a statement to her teammates that she wants this championship more than anything else. A statement to the Valkyries that they will have to pry this title out of Reese's cold, dead heads. A statement to the nation that, when you actually watch basketball, it's clear that she's one of the best players in the league in just her third season." highposthoops.com/angel-rees…

Thanks for saying this and I hope you can put external pressure on Google to be better and not have such clauses in the future The public might have been misled in how open Google is when it comes to allowing valid criticism The fact there are such chilling effects (and potentially others) should give everyone goosebumps The industry simply cannot be allowed to regulate itself as long as it follows such practices
Important, and I'm glad this is finally public. Google DeepMind researchers are under in perpetuity non-disparagement clauses forbidding them from ever speaking critically of the company. I'd already confirmed this with multiple people. Yes, some ex-employees have spoken out nonetheless. But it has also discouraged others from doing so. And yes, it most certainly has a chilling effect with regards to discussions on safety and risk. Others have written compellingly about how important the ability to speak freely and critically is, especially on topics like safety and risk. And what a testament to the research employee community's coordination and hard-won bargaining power it has been to get there at other companies. GDM burn that commons by having this. And everyone who signs burns that commons too. Let's get it changed.
