Hey @GroovyBruce, I saw you went on Carolla’s podcast. If you’re making the rounds promoting anything, give mine a shot sometime. We don’t have a huge following here on Twitter, but we have a much bigger audience on YouTube. And despite the name, I’m not going to make you answer the same 30 Evil Dead questions you’ve been answering for 40 years. It’s a very casual conversation about life, movies, & whatever we naturally get into. Pretty much every guest we’ve had has walked away surprised by how much fun they had. I think we’d have a hell of a conversation.

This was a fun one. Joe Lynch is someone I’ve had the pleasure of becoming good friends with since our last Vegas soirée a couple months back, and man, this guy’s encyclopedic knowledge of film and horror is unreal. My 2¢: I don’t think John Carpenter genuinely hated The Substance. I think he was mocking how horror culture has flipped, how it used to celebrate individuality, but now it’s become a big bandwagon driven cesspool of influencers and Letterboxd reviews. When a movie hits, it suddenly becomes the cool thing to like, and if you don’t, you’re treated like you don’t “get” movies. That conformity is the exact opposite of what horror’s always stood for. To me, JC has always championed the outsider, the individual resisting the group. His worlds are built on mistrust of authority and mob mentality, like Halloween’s suburban denial of evil, The Thing’s paranoia tearing men apart in isolation, They Live’s rebellion against mass consumer hypnosis. Imo his films have always warned what happens when people stop thinking for themselves. So him shrugging off The Substance feels less like disdain for the movie and more like disdain for the culture that blindly crowns it untouchable.

The shit I get for defending Rob Zombie is truly insane. It’s a hill I’m willing to die on though. This cult mentality where if a big enough group hates somebody, then everyone has to join or you’re not a “true horror fan,” it’s exhausting. And honestly, the opposite of what this genre is supposed to be about. We pride ourselves on being outsiders… until it’s time to hate Rob Zombie. Then it’s groupthink or get out.

I’ve spent upwards of $600 on archival footage so far to include some rare shots of what we’re discussing in this episode. Most creators nowadays post their content like a shotgun. They’ll blast you with as many videos as they can, maximizing on spread. Many of the videos will fail, either in performance, or most of the time, in substance, but one pellet will hit. I like to think of my content more like a sniper. One shot, right between the eyes, and deliberate. I colorized these photographs of Ed Gein for an upcoming episode and thought the results were too incredible not to share. It’s fascinating how these events have always been seen in black and white, but with advancements in technology, we’re able to see different dimensions of these once lifeless images we’ve grown so used to. Seeing these in color makes them feel much less like distant folklore, and more like a vivid, unsettling truth.
