Pollution doesn't just affect your lungs, it also affects your brain: it reduces your productivity, makes your decisions worse, it increases chances of you getting Alzheimer's, and it even affects your unborn baby. Here's a big data/research dump on the effects of pollution. 🧵

Second is used by Freud himself - if a lamp overturned somewhere in the basement and set a building on fire, finding that lamp and dousing it will not save the building. (Paraphrased).

'Air conditioning was a most important invention for us, perhaps one of the signal inventions of history.' - Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore's Founding Father) . . "Question: Anything else besides multicultural tolerance that enabled Singapore's success? Answer: Air conditioning. Air conditioning was a most important invention for us, perhaps one of the signal inventions of history. It changed the nature of civilization by making development possible in the tropics. Without air conditioning you can work only in the cool early-morning hours or at dusk. The first thing I did upon becoming prime minister was to install air conditioners in buildings where the civil service worked. This was key to public efficiency." Speed camera proposal: - Driver pays 80% of the fine - Planning dept head pays 10% - Engineering dept head pays 10% Land use & transportation policy would quickly favor traffic calming, and we'd reach Vision Zero goals.

In 1947 when India attained independence, West Bengal’s share in the country's total industrial production was 24%. By 2021, it had declined to 3.5%. Every time I read these numbers for Bengal, my heart sinks with grief. Many industry leaders have gone out of the state. The factors driving the industry out is power shortage, poor law & order situation and uncontrolled trade unionism. Bengal has played such a wonderful role for this country, your thought leaders, industry leaders stood out. Bengal stood out in culture, in music and in knowledge. Now, tell me one parameter where you stand out. It's 'Tolabazi', unfortunately. There's no ease of doing business in West Bengal now. - Smt @nsitharaman in Kolkata.

I was in China for the last 10 days. I went intending to meet cell manufacturers, machine makers, automation companies, and visit good factories. I went there after 4 years, so expected a lot of upgrades after my last visit. The trip did not disappoint me. Sharing some of those:

TIL ! Absolutely thrilled.
Chlorophyll and Hemoglobin The major difference is that plant blood carries a Magnesium (Mg) molecule where our blood contains a Iron (Fe) molecule. Magnesium is what is responsible for making plant blood green, and iron is what makes our blood red.

Good news if you're a foreigner trying to take the high speed rail 🚄 in China, the govt just announced that you do not need to pick up your ticket at a window anymore after in-person passport verification and can do everything online and check in like everyone else. I know on an earlier thread some folks claimed that you didn't need to verify your passport but based on this official announcement and also my personal experience you always did. In practice this wasn't that annoying, but this was usually a separate window from regular ticket purchases and it wasn't always that easy to locate in those ginormous stations. "Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, November 28 (Reporter Fan Xi) The reporter learned from China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. that starting from the 28th, the railway department launched an online identity verification service for foreign passports. Previously, foreign passengers purchasing tickets on the 12306 website were required to bring their original passport to the railway station window to verify their identity information. After the online identity verification service for foreign passports is launched, passengers can log in to the 12306 website and fill in their name, nationality, certificate number and other information according to the system prompts, and the system will automatically complete the identity verification. Passengers can also choose to submit a photo of the passport information page online, which will be manually verified by the backend. In addition to online verification, passengers can still go to the railway station window for verification."

The Hindi film industry played a significant role in portraying the baniya, businessmen, and the wealthy as villains. It was predominantly influenced by Bengali directors. Unfortunately, this contributed to a widespread perception that entrepreneurs were dishonest, while glorifying poverty. A close Bengali friend of mine defied this stereotype by becoming a first-generation entrepreneur 35 years back, yet his own father publicly labeled him as dishonest. The economic conditions in Bengal today can be linked to this mindset. It's crucial for any country to thrive to have entrepreneurs at the forefront. Even China recognized this in the 1970s and transformed its approach to become a strong economy. Trusting and supporting entrepreneurs is essential for both the government and the public. We have a robust regulatory system to ensure they operate within the framework. If an entrepreneur deviates from the system, it's often due to external pressures from those running the system.

Punekars, it’s that time of the year, I am not talking gulabi thandi .. I am referring to varshik NRI pahune mandali visiting us. Here are some namune; Those who insist on only talking in Marathi when they visit us, it’s their style to show us sanakari (ness), same goes with those who make their (poor) children recite shloks in Sanskrit. As amusing as that sounds those kids are not to be blamed for their parents who badly want some form of shabaski from us for maintaining the “roots”. Then there are those who will sit on your sofa eat garam-garam kandaa bhaji & tell us how easy our life is given we have house-help. Remember main thing is, our life is easy or hard depends on where they stand. If they are on FC road & can’t cross it “Kase rahata tumhi ithe kathin aahe!?”.. so basically it’s their exclusive right to comment on. “Indiyat sagala milta” as mahanun you will receive a small ziplock bag of Costco store bought mixed bag of chocolates with dollar store bought gift item. And because different rules of busyness apply in India you will receive an invite for a midweek dinner at a far away location. An unheard of phenomenon in US/UK/.. but Indiyat chalta! Kahihi Aso te aplech aahet & some of us (me) were them some years back. So welcome them, ignore their quirks & stand your ground. You have what they don’t, Vaishali, Chitale Bandhu, ..and most importantly No daylight savings time adjustment:).. PS. If you have read so far, you have time to read last line. This is not for all NRI’s ok.
