Thank you to everyone who has been following our content on Twitter/X. This will be our final post on the platform, but we do hope you will follow us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn so you can continue to get your buggy content fix!
We just never know when we're going to lose the species that is a linchpin in the system. So by protecting whole ecosystems, we can protect many species. Ref: Erlich and Erlich 1981. Extinction: The Causes and Consequences of the Disappearance of Species

This Canberra Day, we wanted to highlight an endangered species from the region - the Key's matchstick grasshopper. This flightless grasshopper is on the IUCN Red List and lives in grasslands - one of the least protected habitats in Australia

"Science is a process of asking questions and then thinking up cool ways to answer them" - Dr Jess Marsh. This International Women's Day, we hope the young scientists of tomorrow will be inspired to follow in the footsteps of the many awesome women working in STEM #IWD2025
Thanks to everyone who entered our Christmas Beetle Drawing Competition. We received a bunch of incredible entries, but congratulations goes to Charlotte Edmundson for her graffiti-style interpretation, now available to pre-order on a tote: invertebratesaustralia.org/m… #cutiecrawlies
It's #SeaWeek! Which offers the perfect time to celebrate the oceans and seas that drive our climate and weather, provide food and resources, offer employment opportunities and are home to inverts! It is vital we protect them

A massive thanks to everyone who contributed to the #ChristmasBeetleCount this season! We now have over 18,000 sightings, enough to compile some meaningful data - soon we hope to have some outcomes to share. Stay tuned... #citizenscience #ozinverts #cutiecrawlies
These beautiful native roaches look nothing like the household ones you may encounter regularly (many of which are invasive). Support Aussie roaches by planting flowering shrubs and helping spread the word about their beauty and diversity! #cockroach #ozinverts #cutiecrawlies
Did you know it's just $50 per year to become a supporter of Invertebrates Australia (and only $25 for juniors)? What a bargain! All funds raised go directly to supporting our work). Find out more at: invertebratesaustralia.org/j…

At the Bogong Moth Summit we will come together to look after the Bogong moth - an iconic but threatened Australian species. IA is a key partner of this event, and the general public is welcome to attend on the 27th of February. Register now at: bogong.org/summit
The @sydneymardigras is in full swing! So we thought we would celebrate some of the bright, colourful and downright fabulous beetles who would fit right in at the parade! #SYDNEYMARDIGRAS #ozinverts #beetles
The Red Decorator Crab covers itself with other marine organisms for camouflage and food storage. This crab is a newfound predator of the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish. Populations of this crab may help to reduce starfish numbers and protect corals! #MarineMonday #ozinverts
This Valentine's Day, we're highlighting a few of the ways that love and reproduction take place in the world of invertebrates...
Still need a gift idea? Why not consider signing up the bug lover in your life as an IA supporter! invertebratesaustralia.org/j… #ValentinesDay #ozinverts
Join IA Founder, Dr Jess Marsh, on this webinar next week with Green Adelaide. She will be discussing the ecosystem services inverts provide, the threats they face, and how we can help. Register for free at: events.teams.microsoft.com/e…
Did you know Australia is home to many unique orchid species that attract pollinators by deceit and disguise? Find out more about these awesome orchids at: ow.ly/HWIh50UVp4H

Porosus means 'with holes' referring to the distinctive, deep pigmented punctures on the wings of the beetle (known as the elytra). This species can be found across Eastern Australia. There's still time to submit your observations to our #ChristmasBeetleCount. Videos: Hauke Koch
Murray River Crayfish are considered a keystone species, meaning it plays a disproportionately large role in the ecosystem. So returning it to the river may have even greater ecological benefits. phys.org/news/2025-01-world-…
As the Aussie summer continues, there are lots of things you can do to help our marine inverts - from avoiding plastic, to submitting photos for citizen science projects. Find helpful links to resources, citizen science projects and more on our website: invertebratesaustralia.org
Another species of interest during our #ChristmasBeetleCount is Anoplognathus vietor. Before our project this species was only known from one location (Windorah). We would love people to keep an eye out in interior Queensland. Image credit: bpjohnstone invertebratesaustralia.org/c…
We asked one of our founders, Dr Jess Marsh, about her favourite invertebrate. "It is so difficult to pick, I have so many! Near the top of my list is a species I have been surveying – the Kangaroo Island Assassin Spider." Check out this poem about them: redroompoetry.org/student-po…
